One weekend Cass and I were sparring together in the guard's yard.

"Your balance is much better now. You've just gotta add more power to your blows." Cass explained.

"Got it." I replied, taking another swing at her with my sword.

After taking a few jabs at Cass, I almost managed to disarm her.

"Nice job, Sabrine. You're officially a better swordsman than probably any princess ever." She chuckled.

"That's a start." I laughed, sheathing my sword.

A shadow glided across the stone at our feet, and I looked up to see Atlas swooping down towards us, no doubt with a letter. He landed on my forearm and I ripped the letter open.

"Sabrine,

I know you don't usually work on the weekends, but my sister has had a fall, she lives on the mainland and Harold and I must go tend to her. Will you work the medics for today while I'm gone? Be at the clinic in an hour if you can.

Sincerely, Mrs. Winifred"

I looked back up to Cass, "I have to go work an emergency shift at the clinic." I explained, "Thanks a lot for training with me today."

"No problem, kid." Cass replied, "Don't get caught on your way out, and more importantly don't let your parents see you with my old sword!" Cass called as I headed to get Calypso.

"I won't!" I replied, waving before running off.

I entered the clinics to see Mrs. Winifred and Harold dressed and packed to go down to the mainland for the weekend.

"There you are, Sabrine! Thank you for coming in so late in the week." Mrs. Winifred smiled.

"It's nothing, I haven't got anything to do today so I might as well come work." I replied.

"Well, Harold and I shouldn't be gone long, but it's likely you'll have to close up shop as well. There shouldn't be many customers in today, just people to pick up prescriptions and such." Mrs. Winifred explained.

"Alright then. You two be safe on the way to your sister's house, and I'll have everything handled here." I nodded.

"Very good, Sabrine. Good luck." Mrs. Winifred replied, gathering her things and heading out with Harold.

Then I said my goodbyes to the Winifreds and began my shift.

Mrs. Winifred was right, there were only a few people in the clinic that day. Just regular townsfolk I knew coming to pick up their basic medication.

The few hours I was there crept by slowly. I used the time I had when customers weren't in to organize the shelves or sweep.

A little before sunset I began to close up shop. Luckily I didn't need to eat supper with my parents that night, because they were out of town for the weekend as well for a wedding in a neighboring kingdom, but I would need to be getting back to the palace soon.

Just as I was about to take off my apron and blow out the candles to leave, the door burst open.

Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner were at the door, Mr. Gardiner holding their daughter in his arms.

Mrs. Gardiner had been in the clinic earlier just this week for a cough remedy for her daughter, but by the look of her now, whatever the issue was had gotten much worse.

"Sabrine!" Mrs. Gardiner cried, "We need your help, Matilda is barely breathing."

For a second I was caught in the initial panic of the situation. Of course the one day I'm working at the clinic alone a medical emergency happens.
