Chapter 5: Classes

Start from the beginning

Daisy listened intently, fascinated by the practical applications.  She can't wait to learn about Mandrakes, though. She's heard they can be quite a handful, which makes it all the more interesting.

The longer the class continued, the more noticeable Professor Sprout's passion for her class became. Daisy didn't mind having to be here three times a week.

--- History of Magic ---

After lunch, they trudged to History of Magic, taught by the ghostly Professor Binns. His droning voice could've put a dragon to sleep.

"And so, the Goblin Rebellion of 1612..."

Daisy fought to stay awake, her head drooping onto her parchment.

Zzzzz.....

Only to be woken up by the noise of the bell signaling her freedom.

---  Transfiguration ---

Professor McGonagall's class was a stark contrast. She began with a stern warning: "Transfiguration is some of the most complex and dangerous magic you will learn at Hogwarts."  But even without the warning, her presence was enough to command silence and respect from every student in class. No one dared to step out of line. They could tell, though, that even if she's strict, she's also very kind.

Her demonstration—turning her desk into a pig and the pig back to the table —left the class in awe and eager to learn. Though, they weren't going to be transforming furniture into animals anytime soon. After taking long, complex notes, they were given a match to be turned into a needle. No one managed to do so by the end of the class.

---  Astronomy ---

Astronomy classes were held at night, looking through telescopes and studying the names and movements of the stars. Daisy loved the quiet beauty of it, though Pansy complained about the cold.

---  Defense Against the Dark Arts ---

This was supposed to be the most exciting class of all, at least to the majority of the students.

Daisy couldn't really care less about this class. She has never been too keen on combative spells. Although, Professor Quirrell has quickly turned her opinion from neutral to disdain for the class.

First of all, the classroom reeked of strong garlic smell. Daisy likes garlic, but not this much. Second of all, Quirrell's lessons turned out to be a bit of a joke. He's a coward at best, Daisy thought. Not to mention, the weird looking turban and its weird smell.

On Thursday, Daisy visited Hagrid during her free period. She told him about her classes, her friends, and even Snape's odd reaction during the Sorting. The words exploded out of her mouth excitedly. She's been wanting to tell him since the sorting ceremony.

She missed being around Hagrid. This is possibly the longest she has been apart from him EVER. As much as she loves Hogwarts, being away from one of her only few guardians saddens her. She tried to be as happy as she could during this little hangout, but grim loomed over her as she noticed Hagrid acting more distant than usual.

"Yeh'll do great, Daisy," Hagrid said, though his smile didn't quite reach his eyes. Daisy frowned a little, but before she could say anything, she heard the school bell, marking the end of her free period. She gave Hagrid a hug before leaving and rushing back to class.

Friday brought double Potions with Gryffindor. Daisy was excited; Potions was her favorite subject.
