Chapter 27: The truth

"I believe, the bond has granted you some form of shared perception." His lips twitched ever so slightly. "Although, I suspect there is something more to it, something rooted in your past with Voldemort himself. Perhaps when one of you is in danger, or when the magic between you flares. I imagine this connection will grow clearer with time."

Daisy and Harry stared at each other, their jaws dropping in unison. The room seemed to spin as the weight of Dumbledore's words sank in.

"Twins? M- me?" Daisy finally uttered. "But... it can't be. Harry was in the muggle world, and Hagrid, Molly, and Remus raised me. And even the newspaper, when they mentioned the night, the boy who lived— How come nobody knew about me, sir?" Daisy asked, her voice trembling.

"That would be my doing," Dumbledore admitted, his voice heavy with regret. "I must apologize to you both, but at the time, I believed it to be the best course of action."

He paused, his gaze sweeping between them. "When I found the two of you that night, I could feel the danger pressing in from all sides. I had made a promise to protect your mother—a promise I failed to keep." His voice faltered, just for a moment, before steadying once more. "But I would not fail you."

The silence that followed was suffocating, tension thickening like a storm cloud. Daisy could hear the weight of unspoken guilt in Dumbledore's voice, see it in the way his fingers intertwined.

"I had to hide you both from the wizarding world," he continued. "There were many who wished to avenge their fallen master, and I could not risk them finding you. The muggle world was the safest option." His gaze drifted past them, lost in a memory only he could see.

"But safety often comes at a cost." He exhaled softly. "I knew I had to separate you. If they ever found one of you, I could not allow them to find both." His eyes, sharp as ever, met Daisy's. "Harry was left with the Dursleys—your mother's sister and her husband. As for you, Daisy, I placed you in the care of those I trusted beyond all doubt—Hagrid, Molly, and Remus. I erased all records of your connection to the Potters, gave you your mother's maiden name, and ensured you would be hidden in plain sight."

He hesitated, then added, "I hope you do not blame your guardians for keeping the truth from you. They acted only on my counsel, with your safety in mind."

Daisy barely registered the words. Her mind spun, the puzzle pieces of her past rearranging themselves into a picture she wasn't sure she was ready to see.

"But, sir, if the muggle world was the safest option, why was I in the wizarding world?" Daisy asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"You were quite special, Daisy," Dumbledore said, his voice gentle yet firm. "There was something different about you—something even we could not fully understand."

His expression unreadable. "I could sense it around you that night, dark magic—your affinity with dark magic. It was much more evident and fresh than now. It was not learned, nor was it something passed down in the usual sense. It simply was—a force within you, unpredictable and untamed. And that, Daisy, made you a wild card."

Daisy felt a chill creep down her spine.

"We thought of all the worst scenarios. We did not know what it meant, or what you were truly capable of," Dumbledore admitted. "That uncertainty was dangerous—not only to you but to those around you. Even the slightest misstep, the smallest surge of power beyond your control, could have risked exposing our world in ways we could not afford. And so, we watched. We guided you where we could, ensured you were never without protection." His eyes softened. "Not out of fear, Daisy, but out of necessity. You may not have understood it then, but we acted in what we believed to be your best interest."
