We all exchanged annoyed glances, the tension thick in the air, before falling into silence. We all fell silent, even Malfoy, who seemed on the verge of exploding with fury, kept his mouth shut. Filch shot us one last glare before storming off.
"That's more like it," Hagrid said gruffly, his deep voice cutting through the stillness. "Now move it, all of you."
.....
We entered the forest, the air growing heavier with each step. The trees loomed like dark sentinels, their branches twisting together, casting deep shadows across the path. Hagrid suddenly crouched, poking at something in a slimy puddle.
"Hagrid, what is that?" Harry asked, his voice filled with concern.
Hagrid looked up, holding out his finger, which had a strange gray substance on it. "Unicorn blood," he said, his voice unusually somber. "Found one dead a few weeks ago. This one's been hurt badly by something."
A chill ran through me. The forest felt darker, more oppressive, as I glanced around, half-expecting something to jump out at us. For a moment, I thought I saw movement behind one of the trees, but when I blinked, it was gone.
"So, we're here to find the poor creature," Hagrid continued, standing up. "Ron, Hermione, you're with me."
My stomach twisted with unease. "But Hagrid—" I began to protest. He raised a hand, cutting me off. "Y/N, this is important. A life is worth more than any argument right now."
I reluctantly nodded, but the thought of being stuck with Malfoy in this dark, eerie place didn't sit well with me. I could practically hear his smirk as Hagrid turned to Harry and me.
"Harry, Y/N, you're with Malfoy." Malfoy grinned, clearly enjoying the situation. "Okay, then. I get Fang," he said, his voice dripping with smugness.
"Fine, but just so you know, he's a coward," Hagrid replied, his tone dry.
Malfoy faltered for a moment, but I couldn't help the chuckle that escaped at the thought of him trying to handle the big, trembling dog. The tension in the air didn't seem to ease, but for a second, I found comfort in that small, fleeting moment of amusement.
...
The group split off in different directions, with Malfoy holding the lantern as we walked deeper into the forest. His voice, full of annoyance, cut through the quiet air once more.
"Wait until my father hears about this. This is servant's work!" he complained again, clearly frustrated.
I rolled my eyes and ignored him. Engaging with him was pointless at this point. "If I didn't know better, I'd say you're scared, Malfoy," Harry teased, his tone laced with sarcasm.
"I'm not scared, Potter," Malfoy shot back defensively, but I noticed a hint of unease in his voice. Suddenly, a long, eerie howl echoed through the trees. We all froze, the sound lingering in the air, sending a chill down my spine.
"Did you hear that?" Malfoy asked, glancing around with wide eyes. I shrugged and kept moving forward, trying to keep my cool. "Let's focus on finding the unicorn, rather than freaking out over some howl." I pushed ahead, my steps steady.
"Come on, Fang," Harry said, following me with the dog at his side. Malfoy groaned, but still trailed behind us. "This is ridiculous," he muttered, his footsteps reluctant.
Despite his complaints, we kept walking through the thick trees. The howls echoed again, but I refused to let it distract me. We had a job to do, and Malfoy's whining wasn't going to slow me down.
