Vareya woke up to the sound of rustling, to the scent of salty air, and the sight of Neteyams glistening back. This was a view that has started to become a common constant in her mornings, yet she wasn't one to complain.
She stayed silent as she watched him move, but it wasn't until a large gust of wind made him chase a stray vine that she realized what he was doing. Half of the hammock was attached to a tree while the other seemed to be currently worked on.
She closed her eyes when he made his walk back, but she had to anyways to calm her melting heart. When she opened them, he was hard at work once again.
She watched as he threaded a thick vine through the torn edges of the hammock, his fingers moving with practiced precision. He looped it, pulled it taut, then tied a firm knot, his grip strong and unwavering. From her angle, she could see his brow furrowed slightly in concentration, lips pressed together as he tested the hold with a firm tug.
Vareya felt her breath catch. She couldn't believe it. To know that someone as kind as Neteyam was so into her, to have someone like him who cares for an unwanted soul such as hers. He's changed her in ways she didn't think was ever possible. Has allowed her to experience emotions and acts, that had never crossed her mind.
It's frightening, terrifying, and utter insanity how she's allowing what she swore shed never do again. Yet there was no stopping it, no controlling the inevitable. Vareya was entirely open, she was laying her heart bare to the man before her. Neteyam has become someone, if possible, who has surpassed Kai. She loved her brother with her entire heart, but this, whatever it is she is going through with Netyam is something so powerful, and so addicting that she never wanted to be rid of it.
After all the wrong she's done in her life, after all the pain she's caused, and lives she's destroyed, she never thought she ever be deserving of happiness again. Vareya still believes she doesn't deserve it, yet with every smile Neteyam sends her way she gets reminded why she has it.
It's because he believed she deserved it, or at least deserved a chance, and then after a lot of suffering they were finally there.
Nothing can change this.
Nothing.
The second that thought crossed her mind she immediately felt uneasy. A horrible memory flashed before her, it was a reminder of the attack, of the fire, of the shooting.
Those were the very words she thought of the second before the attack, and although she wants to believe things are different now, her body suddenly became extremely warm-
Neteyam tied the last knot, and as he stepped back to admire his work it caused Vareya to forget her thoughts. Instead she quickly shut her eyes, pretending to be asleep. With her ears she heard him shuffling around before the sound started to drift further until it stopped entirely. Confused and upset thinking he had left, she opened her eyes and sat up.
Yet she was too late to realize that he had somehow deceived her warrior trained senses and snuck behind her.
" Boo!" He yelled before tackling her onto the sand, landing on top of her. Just as she was about to complain and ridicule him, he shut her up before she could. Neteyam slammed his mouth down on hers, eating away her words and making her mind go blank.
