I was still at the kitchen counter, my laptop open, pretending to focus on my notes even though my brain was still stuck on Billie's last words.

"Actually, it would."

I exhaled slowly, tapping my pen against the countertop, trying to shake it off.

The sound of footsteps and laughter filled the house as the group wandered inside from the backyard, towels draped over shoulders, hair still damp from the pool.

"Alright, who's down for dinner?" Jonathan asked, clapping his hands together.

The others murmured in agreement, and I could already tell where this was going.

Jonathan turned to me.

"Jules, come with us."

"Nah, I'm good," I said, not even looking up from my laptop.

"Oh, come on," he groaned. "You've been in here all night. You need to get out."

"I'm busy," I muttered, gesturing vaguely at my notes.

"You're always busy."

"Because I have things to do."

"And yet," he smirked, "you somehow managed to clear your schedule for Nate."

I glared at him, my fingers tightening around my pen. "Fuck off."

Jonathan laughed, clearly not taking the hint, before turning to Billie.

"Billie, back me up here."

I felt Billie's eyes on me, but I still refused to look up.

"Actually," Billie said, stretching slightly, "I'm kind of tired. I think I'll stay back and keep Juliette company."

I finally looked up, my stomach flipping instantly.

What?

Jonathan tilted his head, surprised. "Wait, seriously?"

Billie shrugged. "Yeah. She shouldn't be alone, right?"

Jonathan looked between us, considering it, before nodding in approval. "That's actually really sweet of you Billie."

I almost rolled my eyes.

Sweet.

Yeah.

That's one word for it.

"Alright, enjoy your nerd night," Jonathan teased, tossing his towel onto a chair before heading toward the door with the others.

One by one, they all disappeared out into the night, leaving the house eerily quiet.

And just like that—

I was alone with Billie.

Billie, who was still standing by the counter, arms crossed, watching me like she knew exactly what she had just done.

I swallowed, gripping my pen tighter, forcing myself to act normal.

"So," she said, slowly, "just you and me tonight, huh?"

My pulse jumped.

I didn't answer.

I just nodded once, pretending to focus on my laptop, pretending like my whole body wasn't on high alert.

Billie smiled.

"Guess we should find a way to entertain ourselves."

"Get over yourself, Billie."
