I was standing outside in the garden, laughing with Angie and Nigel, drink in hand, feeling lighter than I had in weeks.
And then—
I felt it.
That shift in the air.
That undeniable awareness.
Like my body knew she was here before my brain even registered it.
Nigel saw her first.
"Uh... what the fuck is Billie doing here?"
I barely had time to react before Angie turned too, her eyes widening slightly.
I swallowed, wiped my palms against my dress, and said, "I invited her."
Nigel snorted, shaking his head.
"You're fucking hilarious."
"Shut up."
But I was already walking toward her, my heart hammering a little too hard in my chest, my breath catching for just a second when our eyes met.
And fuck—
Those blue eyes.
Still the same.
Still the only thing that could make my entire world tilt slightly off its axis.
For a second, it was awkward.
Neither of us quite knowing how to greet the other, how to bridge the gap between what we were and what we had become.
Then—
"Wow," she said first, glancing around. "I didn't know you knew this many people."
I let out a breath of laughter.
"I don't."
We both grinned, the tension easing just slightly, like falling into a familiar rhythm neither of us had forgotten.
Then I exhaled, looking at her, really looking at her.
"Thanks for coming, Billie."
She held my gaze, something soft, careful, unreadable in her expression.
"I wouldn't miss it, Juliette."
And the way she said it—
Like it meant more than just this party.
Like it meant more than just tonight.
Like it meant her showing up for me in a way she never had before.
The night was light, easy, buzzing with warmth.
I was drunk on laughter, on alcohol, on the simple joy of being surrounded by the people I loved.
The air was thick with the scent of spilled drinks, candle wax, and the last remnants of grilled food, the music now nothing more than a soft hum in the background.
Jonathan and Angie had somehow ended up tangled together, her legs thrown over his lap, their banter flirty, playful, obvious.
I had been watching them for the past ten minutes, trying not to laugh, because Jonathan looked so uncomfortable with how much he liked it.
People had started filtering out, and soon, it was just the ones that actually mattered.
We were all outside, the night air cool against my skin, my head light from the alcohol, my heart warm.
But then—
I went inside for another drink.
And there she was.
