My rut ended quicker than it used to this time. Sonic's voice had definitely helped in getting over it. Still, that night after hearing his voice my mind kept drifting to when I first met him and every moment after...

The school had just started about a week ago. Most friend groups had already reformed by then. As a senior, there weren't new people in our classes and everyone's friendships have been well formed 3 years ago. Which also meant, all of them ignored me unless they needed to talk to me. I'd have another boring, but quiet, and peaceful school year. Our next assignment was a book report, so I'd made my way to the library during lunch. The smell of books was always soothing as well as the respectful quiet of the space. I heard someone behind me quietly talking to the librarian before they walked up beside me. The pin on their jacket read beta they were reading off a list, and pulling books from the shelf.

"Excuse me," they whispered and reached over my arm for another book. So close to me I could see how pretty their face was. Vibrant green eyes and long lashes... they had a subtle sweet scent before walking away.

"N... no problem..." I couldn't speak up more than a whisper... Their smell... it was only a second but it felt like it was lingering. Betas didn't have scents like omegas and alphas did. Yet, that sapphire colored hedgehog had something different about them. It's none of my business. I should just pick a book and go.

Over time, I kept spotting those vibrant blue quills around the school. I learned from others calling out that his name was Sonic. He was friendly with everyone. He enjoyed gym class and had a group of friends he often sat with for lunch. He seemed cheerful all the time. I waved at him once, he hadn't seen me. Although my wave wasn't very noticeable either. I just wanted to say hi. He seemed so nice to everyone. I liked how he could always get someone to smile. I'm staring, I should stop... I was looking at him more and more when I noticed him around in the hallways. My secluded spot at lunch, I could watch him and his friends from afar.

Then, it wasn't just school I spotted Sonic. We shopped at the same grocery store. Sonic hadn't noticed me while looking at the snack selection. He was grabbing a large bag of mints. He was right next to me, and again... he smelt a little sweet... but he was a beta.

"Excuse me, could one of you boys grab that box of crackers for me?" an elderly woman in one of those scooters came down the aisle.

"Sure," Sonic grabbed the box and she thanked him before they both moved on.

It was mostly cloudy that day. It had rained all night and the sky was slowly clearing. I couldn't remember the reason I was in that hallway anymore because I had burned that image if him into my mind. Sonic was alone. He was never alone. Always surrounded by others, friends or just school mates. He was always laughing or listening along. He goofed off with his friends sometimes but was always around people. And yet, he was alone. Like that time in the library, the only other memory I have of him being alone.

Beautiful... He was leaning on the windowsill as a patch of sun came through the clouds. It made his fur shine and his eyes glimmer. He had the softest, most genuine smile I'd ever seen, simply smiling at the warmth of the sun beaming over him. Sonic was the most beautiful man I had ever seen. It felt like times had stopped as I got to gaze at a painting from nature. It felt like my joy was shattered as someone called Sonic's name and his usual cheerful self returned.

I love him... I couldn't get him out of my mind, and I didn't want to. Sonic was a wonderful person, and beautiful. It didn't matter that he was a Beta, I wanted to finally talk to him.
