~*~Reed's P.O.V.~*~

The next morning when we turned into the police station, it was me, Alex and Meg who went in to pick up Benjamin while some of the others waited outside.

Meg had a law degree although she wasn't a lawyer but worked a lot on our charity events and engagements. Together with Riley, they were responsible, and she was also familiar with the work of social services. I had given Rogers a call before we headed there to confirm that we were coming.

"It's not enough with a ravaging wolf in town, now the youth are starting to break into the zoo," he sighed when he let us in.

"We heard about it on the news yesterday and thought we recognized Benjamin."

"How are you connected now again?" Rogers asked as we stopped at the information desk for the formal paperwork before the bail was paid.

"He's part of our rehabilitation work with vulnerable youth," Meg answered confidently. "We've been looking for him since he left the shelter."

"I see... Does he have a family?"

"Yes, a brother in another state."

"Usually, it's a family member who pays the bail and not the richest man in town," Rogers said almost suspiciously.

"As you may understand, his family isn't in a position to do such a thing." Rogers nodded slowly.

"He will be charged with burglary, and we suspect the reason may be drugs."

"Is he under the influence?" I asked while signing the papers.

"We have taken blood samples and are waiting for answers, but inside the Zoo, he had broken into one of the stables. There was an overturned cabinet with painkillers and other medications. I assume he maybe looked for something to use."

"Was something missing?"

"We don't know yet."

"Have you questioned him?"

"Yes, yesterday, and this morning. But he hardly says anything."

"He's sensitive," Meg replied.

"Yes. But his name is Benjamin Barklyn according to his ID we found on the hayloft, seventeen years old but turning eighteen in May. But you probably already know that." Meg nodded to appear credible. "Even if I let you pay the bail, I can't let him leave town until we have sorted this out. I would prefer to wait for the result of the blood samples, but I trust you to make sure he doesn't leave?"

"Of course, sir."

"Would you contact the social services too? Since he's a minor, it is something we have to do."

"Meg will take care about that."

"Good."

There was no denying how there were benefits being us. The police broke their own procedures by letting us, what they thought, contact the social services instead of them and if I just pulled a few strings, that charge would soon be swept under the table too.

We received Benjamin's belongings like his phone before Rogers let a policeman lead us to the custody where we could see Benjamin huddle in one corner on the floor, face hidden to his arms which were wrapped around his legs.

"Barklyn," the policeman said as he put the key in the door. "These fine and too polite people have bailed you out and are here to get you now."

Benjamin had been given a pair of sweatpants and a worn t-shirt by the police. When he looked up and saw us his gaze darkened before he turned his face away.
