~*~Reed's P.O.V.~*~

"Reed, something has happened."

"Another attack?"

"Reed, I... This is... It's just awful."

"Who has Ben attacked now?"

What was not allowed to happen happened... What I feared would happen but hoped wouldn't. I understood that Ben wouldn't quit or listen to my pleading. He was clear about that. And I understood him, having the Royals using him like a puppet and keeping his mate from him.

Neither Otto nor Angus said anything when we went to the accident site, not even about the police cars outside of town by the side of the road.  My sister's troubled words rang in my ears.

The police had like always cordoned off the area by the time we arrived, but a crowd had formed, and the usual reporters and curious civilians alike were trying to catch a glimpse of what had happened.

Some angry civilians cursed at us and yelled how we were responsible, but I tried to ignore them and just focused on getting to the sight.

Otto paved the way for me and Angus and at the roadblock a policewoman lifted the tape so we could duck under it.

"It's horrible," Rogers said as he stood staring down at the lifeless body at his feet, hidden by a tent to obscure the view. "This old woman was defenceless against that beast."

"When did,"

But I fell silent as I stared down at the lifeless woman. My face paled as a kind of deep sorrow washed over me. I took a step back, almost gasping which made Angus to look at me in confusion.

"What is it?"

"It's... It's Mrs. Dylan." Her chest was ripped open, and her stomach punctured by large fangs. "The old lady who sold us the crib. Ryan grew very fond of her, and we visited her yesterday."

"Fuck."

"You're having a baby?" Rogers asked and I looked at him startled before letting my eyes fall on Mrs. Dylan again.

"Uh..."

"When did this happen?" Otto interrupted. "Or what does your forensics think about the time of death?"

"They think about three hours ago, which breaks the wolf's previous pattern. All attacks have so far taken place between evening and night. This is early morning." Rogers let his eyes fall on Mrs. Dylan. "Such a fragile and old woman stood no chance against that wolf. But why her? There must be better prey for it, right? I mean; she wasn't much more than skin and bones."

"Who knows?" Angus answered since I had no words.

All I could think of was Ryan. This would break my mate, for sure. I had to return home as soon as possible to care for him.

"This calls for serious action now, boys," Rogers continued. "The hunters will have their say in the matter and a protective hunting is guaranteed to become relevant if they have any say about it."

"Outside the reserve," Angus stated.

"For now."

"You have no right to,"

"We have to think about the safety of the people, Mr. Hook," Rogers answered Angus stiffly. "The track of the wolf leads toward the road to your reserve. Yes, a long way for it to run and maybe it turned off somewhere else. But now it no longer circles around Holbeck. The past days attacks and persecution outside your immediate area raises concerns. If it's your wolves, it could mean trouble."

"But this isn't our wolf," Otto replied matter-of-factly and sternly. "We already track our pack sir, and they never leave their territory. Yes, they may guard their territory more intense and force the wolf away when it tries to cross the borders, but they never head into town."
