Mark began to change.
He stopped eating. His eyes grew darker each day, ringed with black veins. Sometimes, when he spoke, it was in another voice—low, guttural, not his own.
Sarah monitored him constantly. She took notes. Compared drawings from the book to the symbols forming beneath Mark's skin.
Ben kept his distance, but tension grew. They both knew something was wrong.
One night, Mark's nose began to bleed. Not red—but black. A thick, tar-like substance.
Sarah demanded he let her help.
But it was too late.
The infection wasn't spreading.
It was awakening.
That night, Mark wrote in his sleep—pages of strange runes, using his own blood.
Sarah discovered them the next morning, laid out like scripture.
The black book was changing.
Now... it responded to him.
