The temple was dark inside. The walls were wet, and strange symbols were carved into the stone. Sarah and Ben moved quietly, holding knives. They followed the sounds of chanting.
They reached a big room.
Mark was there, standing in front of the gate. The gate was alive—it glowed red and pulsed like a heartbeat. Thick black smoke came out of it. The cult stood around Mark, chanting louder.
"Mark!" Sarah shouted. "You don't have to do this!"
Mark turned slowly. His eyes were dark. His face was pale. "This is what I was born for," he said.
Ben took a step forward with his knife. "Don't make me stop you."
The gate behind Mark cracked open. Red light spilled out. A large tentacle reached through. The wind screamed.
The god was waking up.
Mark dropped to his knees. His mind was breaking.
But he still had one choice left to make.
