Auntie Cheng wouldn't be back for another ten days or so, and ever since the Lunar New Year, Tang Tang hadn't had any of Auntie Cheng's home-cooked meals. Now, she was starting to miss them.
After eating two ice creams, she wasn't very hungry and only had a light dinner before heading upstairs to organize her things. With the art exam over, she had to return to school the next day. After so many days without studying, Tang Tang felt her headache return at the thought of math. For the next three months, she would have to work hard again.
Dana had told her before that she didn't need to push herself so much. Tang Tang's past two scores were well above the cutoff for top-tier universities, and that didn't even include her art exam.
Tang Tang understood that, but she still wanted to do even better than before.
If the current Yan Yan were really her, it wouldn't matter, but now that it was a stranger who opposed her in every way, just thinking about people mocking her for being outdone by Yan Yan after the exam results made Tang Tang feel frustrated.
She hadn't been reviewing for long when a familiar pain started to rise in her lower abdomen. A sense of doom crept up on her, and she quickly checked the date on her phone, her face instantly turning pale.
She rushed to the bathroom.
Ten minutes later, the girl whose face had just turned green was now as white as a sheet.
She had really overestimated herself.
Right before her period started, she had eaten two ice creams, daring to challenge her period like that.
As soon as the cramps hit, the pain was unbearable. It felt like someone had installed an egg beater inside her stomach, churning her insides until she was dizzy. Tang Tang dragged herself to the bed and curled up with a pillow pressed to her stomach.
After the pain eased a little, she quickly wrapped herself in a blanket and hid under the covers to sleep.
This was her usual way of dealing with menstrual cramps—sleeping. If she could fall asleep, at least she wouldn't feel the pain in her dreams.
Every night, before going to bed, Ming Shaoyan would walk around the house, checking that all the doors were locked. It was a good habit he had developed. But tonight, for some reason, he hadn't gone downstairs.
At 11 p.m., as usual, Ming Shaoyan went to bed. He didn't think much of it.
In the middle of the night, he was woken up by a faint noise outside.
The soundproofing in the house was excellent, but Ming Shaoyan was a light sleeper. The quieter the surroundings, the more noticeable the small noises outside became.
He pulled back the covers, put on his robe, and opened the door.
The moment the door opened; the noise became clearer. Following the sound, Ming Shaoyan went downstairs and saw bright light streaming from the kitchen. As he approached, he saw his niece, who should have been asleep, clutching her stomach with one hand while rummaging through the cabinets with the other.
She looked like she was barely alive.
Ming Shaoyan's brow furrowed as he strode over, "What's going on?"
Tang Tang hadn't heard him approach—maybe because of the blood loss, her hearing wasn't great at the moment. Ming Shaoyan's sudden voice startled her.
Had she made too much noise? Feeling deeply apologetic, Tang Tang tried to stand up to apologize, but the moment she moved, the intense pain in her stomach yanked her back down.
