"(Y/n)? Is that you, are you there?" Joseph's voice came again, cutting through your stunned silence. You were at a loss for words as you struggled to stutter something out.
"Um, yes, yes I'm here! It's me!" You finally replied, still not quite sure what to say or how to react.
"How have you been doing? You're out of the hospital obviously. Have you been healing alright?" He asked, and you couldn't help but laugh a little.
"Yeah, I'm okay. I'm healing just fine. A little sore, but good otherwise." You mumbled, toying with the phone cord as you spoke.
"When do you think you'll be ready to join back up with us? Don't push yourself of course, take as much time as you need. I'm just looking for a timeframe since we're getting closer to the end goal." He explained, and you started to feel that sadness bubbling up again. What was he talking about?
"I-I'm fine, Mr. Joestar, but Jotaro said..." You trailed off, unsure if you should continue. Jotaro already made it very clear what was going to happen, it almost seemed cruel to have you relive it again.
"What? What did he say?" Joseph asked, and you sighed.
"I don't- I don't know if I should say... It's just, you know... When I first came along with you guys, there were some conditions, that's all. I broke the promise I made." You muttered sheepishly.
"Did Jotaro say something to you when we were at the hospital?" The old man prodded further.
"Nothing much, he just reiterated what was said back in India - It's not a big deal, I don't want to put you guys at risk. It's okay, you guys don't really need me anyways." You let out a nervous laugh, not quite sure how to proceed from here.
"Hang on a minute, (Y/n)." Joseph instructed, and you heard him set the phone down, but not hang up. There was silence for a brief moment, and then you faintly heard chaos in the background. You furrowed your brows, and called the old man's name, but there was no real response.
The chaos grew louder, though you couldn't make much of anything out. Just overlapping, muffled voices.
You heard shuffling, and then the sound of the receiver being picked up again.
"Hello?" Came a different voice this time. It was Jotaro.
"Um, hi?" You mumbled.
"The old man and the others are insistent that you come along again. But I'll only allow it on the same conditions as before. You won't get another chance like this, shit is getting real now and I'm not going to risk putting any of us in danger again." He spoke firmly, just like he usually did, and you couldn't believe you were getting lectured by a teenager.
"Okay, Jotaro. I accept." You said, standing your ground and not letting your voice waver.
"Tell her you're sorry!" You could faintly hear Joseph calling out in the background.
Jotaro grumbled a 'no' in response, and then there was more arguing and noise, until Joseph returned to the phone.
"(Y/n)? Are you going to come back?" He asked, and you just laughed.
"Yes. I'll leave now. I'll be on the first plane to Cairo." You replied, unable to hide the smile in your voice.
The two of you spoke for a minute more, you promising to call him as soon as you purchased your ticket, before saying your goodbyes. You hung up the phone and rolled off the bed, feeling like a great weight was off your shoulders, like you could finally breathe again.
You pulled out your travel bag, and hurriedly packed the essentials. You found yourself even more grateful now for your sudden urges to clean that morning, as everything was especially easy to find.
You closed your bag and tossed it over your shoulder, tugging on your boots and grabbing the room key off the nightstand. You did a final sweep of the room, mentally going through your checklist, before darting out the door and down to the lobby.
-
The cab drive to the airport was grueling, for no other reason than your nerves making it impossible to sit still. You really couldn't believe it. You were going back. You'd see them all again. Jotaro and Avdol and Kakyoin and Joseph and Iggy and Polnareff. Your heart beat louder just at the thought of it.
When you finally finished jumping through the hoops of getting your ticket on such short notice, you found the nearest payphone and called the others. You let them know when your flight was departing, your estimated arrival time, and Mr. Joestar assured you they'd be there to meet you at the airport.
You still had several hours to wait, but your heart was feeling so full that you could barely sit still for more than a few minutes.
You walked, you got dinner, you drank, you ate, you wrote, you read, you watched. The minutes were ticking by painfully slowly.
Finally, you resolved yourself to sitting your ass down and reading your book, for no other reason than to help the time pass. Every time your eyes drifted, you'd mentally scold yourself, and pick it back up again.
You did, thankfully, eventually get sucked into your book, finding yourself unable to pull your attention away until you finally turned the last page. As you checked the clock, you realized the timing couldn't have been any more perfect. You had just a few minutes before boarding, and you gathered your things to line up along with the few others who already stood there.
When you finally boarded the plane and settled in your seat, you were practically trembling with anticipation. You couldn't wait to see everyone again. It truly felt like a part of you was missing, being apart from them for so long. And as much as you hated to admit it, that stupid Frenchman in particular.
Your heart raced as you thought about it, cheeks flushing as you pictured the reunion between the two of you. Would you be able to forget about everything that happened? Would he still be feeling guilty about your injury? What would the next steps be for the two of you...
You shifted nervously in your seat, mind and heart racing as you tried and failed to pay attention to the in-flight movie, anything to keep your thoughts from drifting too far. You hoped and prayed eventually you'd fall asleep, and wake up back where you were really supposed to be.
