Lyric

I stood in front of Tristan's office, hand raised, ready to knock, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. Just knock and get it over with, Lyric. I thought to myself.

Easier said than done.

Tristan wasn't an easy man to talk to, especially not when the subject matter involved our son, Trevor, and the gaping chasm of mistrust that lay between us. Frankly, after our last conversation I'd be surprised if he even gives me the time of day.

But I have to try.

Finally, I knocked, the sound sharp and brittle in the hushed silence of the hallway. A gruff "Come in," echoed from inside and I pushed the heavy oak door open, stepping into a room that was as intimidating as its owner.

Tristan sat behind a massive desk, his grey eyes, sharp and unforgiving, met mine. He was a study in contrasts: the brutal hardness of his tattoos offset by the surprisingly soft fall of his dark hair. He was undeniably sexy, even when radiating an aura of simmering danger.

"Lyric," he said, his voice a low rumble. "What do you need?" His tone was devoid of warmth, the usual sarcasm absent. This was different. He was... waiting.

"We need to talk."

"About?" He raises a brow.

"I want to trust you." I start and his eyes narrow. "But I need you to show me that I can trust you."

"Do you now?" He chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. The word hung in the air, heavy and fragile. He leaned back in his chair, the expensive leather creaking under his weight. "And what makes you think I'm going to give you the time of day again?"

I swallowed hard, the lump in my throat constricting my breath, my nerves suffocating me. "I figured you'd say that but.. just hear me out, okay?" I asked, moving to stand closer to his desk. His eyes followed my movements, calculating and analyzing me. "I realize that I've been... giving you a hard time when it comes to Trevor but you have to see where I'm coming from," I managed, my voice trembling slightly. "After years of not seeing you, you show up to my apartment, beating up my brother and holding a gun to Trevor's head. I couldn't just... ignore that and it gave you a bad first impression."

He sighed, a sound that seemed to carry the weight of a thousand unspoken words. "I wasn't thinking straight in that situation, Lyric. I couldnt just let Allen walk away knowing he stole from me. Do you know how that would make me look. It would've fucked up my reputation. More than you can ever imagine." He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture almost apologetic. "Im not apologizing for what I did to Allen but I will apologize for threatening Trevor. I wasn't aware he was even there or that he was my son. It just happened so fast and I was still in shock with seeing you there. The adrenaline..." He trailed off, his gaze distant, lost in the turmoil of his own past.
