Choices the third of four in the Shattered Series, (Shattered, Forgiven, Choices, and The After,with)

Chapter 18

"Adam" Kim mumbled finally snapping out of it she raced down the hall and returned within a few minutes.

She hugged Annie, "please call me as soon as you know something, please?" Annie asked fighting to hold back tears.

"We will kiddo" Al said as he quickly hugged her "lock the door" he told her as he helped Kim to the car.

"Alright, Al tell me what you know" Kim asked "don't lie to me"

"I don't know anything, I had stopped in to see Hank. We were planning on stopping at Molly's for a few drinks, just waiting on Adam and Kevin to finish up when he got the call. They didn't have any information other than shots fired" he heard Kim gasp and try to stifle a sob.

They wheeled both gurneys into the emergency room, Adam had been in and out of consciousness and Kevin was still unresponsive, Kim spotted Antonio first.

"Antonio, how's Adam?" She grabbed his arm, the blood on his hands didn't go unnoticed, "oh my god is that Adam's blood?"

Antonio wished he had washed his hands, "uh, yea it is" he said softly.

Kim felt her knees buckle, Al catching her, "where is he now, what happened?" She was able to ask.

"I'm not totally sure, I know he was shot on his right  side" he pointed to the area just above his hip, "when we got to the scene, he was talking and trying to help Kevin" Antonio stared at the floor, "the doctor should be out soon"

"Kim, where's Adam?" She heard Bob coming through the doors of the emergency room, still dressed in his patrol uniform, "is he okay?"

"I don't know" she told him as she wrapped her arms around him, "Kevin's been shot too"

Annie paced the living room, she couldn't sit still. She grabbed her cellphone and hoped he would be awake, she was relieved when he answered "Derek?" her voice shaky and soft.

Derek shot up in bed, "what's wrong?" he had come the realization that he cared about her and it was no longer just a means to an end but what he hoped would develop into something. He had spent the evening trying to figure out a way to tell her the truth and in a way where she wouldn't hate him, "Annie what is it?"

She felt the tears fall, "I'm not sure, my brother was working and he's been hurt somehow, I don't know. His friend came here and took my sister in law to the hospital and I'm here by myself with their kids. I'm terrified Derek" a sob escaping her lips.

"Do you want me to come over?" He asked, he couldn't believe it as the words escaped his mouth, "if you want company or something"

She sat down, "would you? I'm really scared" she gave him the address and hung up.

"Mrs Ruzek?" The doctor called, Kim raced towards her.

"Is he okay?" She asked not caring what the doctors name was.

"He is, he is lucky. The bullet went through his side, he lost a decent amount of blood and will be admitted over night, but it didn't require surgery. Just a few stitches and some monitoring over night but I think he's fine" the doctor smiled, "follow me I will take you to his room"

"Any word on Kevin, boss?" Jay asked Hank as they waited, "he lost a lot of blood" Jay ran his hands through his hair, "how the hell did Sanchez know we had eyes on him? They ambushed them boss, Adam and Kevin didn't stand a chance huh?"

Hank put his hand on Jay's shoulder, "we will figure it out, have you checked in with Erin yet? I bet she's a wreck" he knew Jay needed a distraction. "Go call her, check in on my grandson while you're at it"
