"See, y'all take forever—I been sitting in the car for fifteen minutes," Kadeem said, walking into my apartment.

"Well, nobody told you to sit in the car," I said, fixing Deuce's clothes. "We finna be ready. I gotta make sure my kids not out here looking like anything," I added, rolling my eyes.

"Okay, come on, y'all," I said, grabbing my things. "You see how I put them in red, white, and blue but it don't look tacky?" I asked as we all walked out the door.

"I ain't even notice. You did good—for somebody who don't know how to dress," Kadeem said, laughing.

"Who? Nigga, I put that shit on every day—on my granny," I said, locking the door and heading to the elevator. "We all matching, so if I can't dress, you can't either. Remember, I put all our outfits together. The only thing you did was pick these uncomfortable-ass Balenciagas," I added, rolling my eyes again.

He laughed, looking down at his shoes. "Man, these Balenci's cost more than your whole outfit. Stop playin'."

"Boy, please. That's the problem now—y'all swear 'cause something got a name on it, it look good. Meanwhile, I'm the one who had us all stepping without breaking the bank," I said, adjusting my bag on my shoulder as we stepped into the elevator.

"Nanaaaa!" the twins said in sync, running up to my mama with their little arms stretched out.

"Hiii, my babies!" she said, bending down to hug them both, planting kisses on their foreheads.

"Hey, Mama," I said, stepping in to hug her too.

"Hey, Sani," she replied, hugging me back with a smile.

"I told Deem to come in and speak first," I said, rolling my eyes, "but he insisted on talking to the people outside."

"It's fine," she laughed, waving it off. "I'ma crack his ass with a firework later."

"Nana, where the firecrackers?" Deuce asked, popping up beside her.

"All the stuff's outside—you can go light one. The big ones are for later," she said, pointing toward the door. The twins took off running before she could even finish her sentence.

"Hey, my party peopleee!" Kymora called, stepping into the house with her arms wide.

"Hey, bestie boo," I grinned, giving her a side hug.

"Hey, Mamaaaa," Mora smiled, hugging me back before making her way to my mama.

"Hey, baby," my mama said, pulling her into a warm hug and kissing her forehead.

Kymora flopped down on the couch next to me, kicking off her slides. "So where Mr. Deem at? Ain't he supposed to be up in here too?"

I sucked my teeth, rolling my eyes. "Girl, outside entertaining like he the mayor or something. I told him to come in and speak first, but you know how he do."
