It had now been about four and a half months since the horrible night had passed. I had packed and moved out of my apartment to get away from the encounters with Dacey, which still, only I knew about. The police had been doing their best to find him, but they never actually succeeded. They told me he was probably hiding out in another state by now. The officers said they're still searching, but at this point it sounded like a lost cause.

I now had a little baby bump, which Tyler and Josh liked to poke at. It was so nice at Tyler's house with just the three of us. Things were finally starting to settle down for me. Tyler and I were sort of in a relationship, but it wasn't what you would call normal. We didn't kiss too much or do intimate things- we just felt closer- and I liked it.

Today, Tyler and I were going to see the sex of the baby. I told him I didn't want to get attached to them, but he just really wanted to know the right pronouns. It bugged him for some silly reason, so I agreed.

"Are you packed yet?" Tyler asked as he drove. We were leaving for their tour soon.

"We still have another week. I'll do it in a few days."

He pulled into a close parking space and took the keys out of the ignition. "Now let's go see what the heck you are!" he said, foolishly talking to my stomach. I rolled my eyes. He seemed more excited than I was.

We wandered through the lobby and rode up the elevator to be met by the doctor who would be doing the ultrasound.

Once I laid down, we got the dreaded question. "So how are mommy and daddy doing?" the clueless woman asked.

We both smiled awkwardly. "Actually, not the daddy," I said gesturing to him sitting on the other side of me.

"...Oh." the poor woman said in confusion. Things felt awkward as that instantly stopped the conversation.

"...So this will be a little cold," she changed the subject before she started lathering the gel onto my now exposed stomach. I looked up to Tyler and he smiled at me, causing me to smile back.

She placed some kind of machine on my stomach now, going back and forth. From where I was, I couldn't see the screen, but I watched Tyler's eyes intently move back and forth as a more intense smile formed on his face.

"Everything is looking perfect. Beautiful child." My heart almost sank when she said that. I didn't want this kid to be all nice and perfect because I was letting them go.

"Let's see here... it's a... girl!"

I quickly turned to Tyler, gasping and he grabbed a hold of my hand and squeezed it tight. There was a little, tiny baby girl in my stomach.

"Do you want pictures sent home?" she asked, expecting a yes. My smile instantly faded. I knew I shouldn't. I just couldn't get myself attached. I had to get her out of me and move on with my life.

"Um, no thank you," I said. She must not hear that like... ever. Tyler's smile was now gone, too. She smiled funny and didn't respond. She just continued to clean the gel off of me.

It was quiet on the way home until he spoke up. "I'm sorry, Jessica. Maybe that wasn't such a good ide-"

"No, it's okay. As long as I didn't see her, which I didn't, I'll be fine."

"Okay. She really was cute, though. I don't know what Dacey looks like exactly, but if she ends up looking anything like you, she'll be gorgeous."

I smiled a sad smile. It was such a bittersweet thing of him to say. He had good intentions, he just didn't know when to stop.

"Shit, sorry... too far again," he said shaking his head. I leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. He was trying and that's all that mattered.
