Edition 5: Get To Know Me
This is an interview of myself I did for the WattPadTimes. Seeing as they deleted their account and are probably never going to publish this, I decided to post it. By the way; they asked the questions.
When did you start writing?
“As far back as I can remember, I’ve always be writing. Even as a child, I would write words and draw pictures all over our walls. Poor mum and dad ended up covering the walls in butcher’s paper so they wouldn’t be ruined. Howbeit, the earliest memory I have of writing I have is a short story I wrote in year two. All I can remember is describing a girl as she ran faster and faster to avoid capture. I got full marks, but I doubt it would actually be that good if I reread it today.”
On 抖阴社区, do you prefer reading or writing?
“I have to say that I would considerably prefer writing. Words are almost narcotic for me; I love discovering new words, and using them to mould each different character. Although writing, for me is extremely laborious; I go over each sentence, check it and re-check it until every word in every sentence is perfect.
Generally I find that finding original stories that really capture my interest on 抖阴社区 is so hard nowadays that I end up sticking with the published books. Sometimes, when I have spare time, I’ll try, but I’m finding that I’m really attracted to stories that are outside of the teen (now, almost tween) genre. And let’s face it; 抖阴社区 really isn’t the place I guess for that sort of thing.”
How many stories have you written (complete or not)?
“Complete… well admittedly none. The first serious (although I don’t take it seriously anymore) novel I wrote was called ‘Insomnia’, and there is a very good reason why it’s not on 抖阴社区. Conceived immediately after I read Twilight and I had (shockingly) caught onto the fad a little too much. It was essentially about an immortal duchess from the Renaissance, who lived in a modern day society. Predictably, being the naïve little year seven I was, the protagonist also faced the identical dilemmas to my life at the time. Following that was ‘Midnight’ – vampiric, year seven-ish, and completely shocking. I’m going to leave it at that…
The second serious attempt I had at a story was ‘The Many Faces of Llidia,’ which was another little moderately generic teen fiction. It followed the romance of the orphaned Aurora to an incredibly cryptic Mason; whom had a slight streak of bad-boy charisma. Though I am prouder of it than Insomnia, the plot fell to pieces after I insufficiently planned it. Eventually, it got to the point where I had no idea how I would make it to the original ending. Personally, from my experiences on this story, I seriously advise all writers to not try and “wing it” with their plot, because if you want your story to be realistic, it must be incredibly structured.
Finally, onto my current project, ‘Beyond Grace’. Following my bad luck with ‘Insomnia’ and ‘The Many Faces of Llidia’, I decided to start afresh. ‘Beyond Grace’ broaches darker, heavier themes than my norm, and certainly is more conceptual than what I’m accustomed to. It depicts the tale of Cash; an anguished police officer who must learn to differentiate betwixt love and lust; his past and present. I feel that this story certainly deviates from the stereotypes imbibed in my past works, and certainly addresses more adult issues. I am really proud of ‘Beyond Grace’, and I feel it is such a change from my mediocre beginnings. I really can’t wait to finish it!”
What was the last book you read?
“The last story I read was ‘Matched’ by Ally Condie. It depicts the story of Cassia, a girl who lived in a world where everyone and everything was dictated by “The Officials”. Marriages were predetermined, meals delivered pre-packaged – even their computers predicted their future actions. However, Cassia decides to break free from the constraints of her society. Although hyperbolic, I think this story is a great metaphor for what is happening in our lives today and really illustrates the importance of being yourself.”
