One. Thousand. Mother. Fucking. Reads. HOLY BALLS GUYS, YOU ARE THE BEST.
It doesn't occur to me, as that number increases, that it's actual people with lives and real blood coursing through their veins and toenails reading this. All 1,000 of you are people. And you're reading the story of an absolute stranger sophomore girl who's obsessed with idiots singing about Harry Potter and thinks she could be a writer someday. It's all a bit surreal.
Enough of my blog-like Author's Note, and time for the story!
CHAPTER 12: ELI'S POV:
"I will never do anything to hurt you." I typed into my computer, one week later. I found a way to incorporate it into the plot of my story. I felt a chill slide its way down my spine as I suppressed it with coffee. Something about it was daunting to me. A promise that could be so easily broken. That's gold, I thought as I made a mental note to add that line in a further chapter.
I closed the screen and observed the Chicago morning traffic. Thank God I don't need to be somewhere this morning; rush hour in my area is almost impossible to navigate.
I felt my phone vibrate on my lap. I glanced down at the CALLER ID. "Joe Walker AKA Boy Toy." I smirked at the name he gave himself as I answered.
"YO," I said deeply, impersonating Jim in Starship.
"Hola! Que pasa?" Joe asked in a high pitched voice.
"I don't know what the fuck you just said."
"Neither do I. I think it's 'Hello. What's up." But it could also have to do with your name... Whatever. GUESS WHAT TODAY IS?" he screamed in the receiver.
"A day important enough to blow out my eardrum?"
"OUR ONE MONTH ANNIVERSARY!"
"Really? I thought that was in two days." Silence. "I'm kidding!" More silence. "Joe?... Joey?... Joseph?... Josephi?" Silence. "I guess, since you hung up on me, that means I'm gonna sing into the empty space. With much fear of me blowing your eardrums out." Silence. "Okay! That's what I'm gonna do!"
"Joseph, all alone in the moonlight, he can smile if he needs to. Open up, enter in." I sang in a loud falsetto, impersonating Cats.
"Okay, okay, okay! You weren't kidding when you said you suck at singing. Like, every single note was flat. Holy shit," Joe finally spoke up.
"I warned you!"
"Now, what time are you free?" he asked me.
"Well, let me check my calendar, ah yes, I may have to cancel my emergency root canal and miss the flight to Venice, but I'm pretty sure I'm free all day. Unemployment truly does rock sometimes."
"You never cease to amuse me. By the way, you look cute on your balcony with your coffee and laptop. What a bibliomaniac." I looked down at the parking lot sprawled below to see Joe sitting on the hood of his car.
"Two things. First: you know that word? And second: that is a handicapped spot, you know." I saw him laugh beneath me. "Come on up."
"Will do."
Three minutes later, Joe was sitting on my couch with several small presents, wrapped in newspaper. "Nice wrapping job, I see?" I asked as I placed his gift on the coffee table.
"That almost sounded like British slang. By the way, how did you get ready so fast? You were in your PJ's when I saw you down there."
"Magic. And the fact I had my outfit placed out for today and I happen to be having a good hair day." I glanced down to my royal blue peplum shirt that exposed the slightest amount of cleavage and white shorts. It went well with Joe's plaid button-down and khaki shorts, bowling hat in hand.
