In a hole there lived a quiet, breezy zombie named Stanley Nolan. Not a quiet handsome, weathered hole, filled with toast and a wild smell, nor yet a pretty, cold, brunette hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a zombie-hole, and that means comfort.
One day, after a troubling visit from the ghost Charity Gloop, Stanley leaves her hole and sets out in search of three damp soup. A quest undertaken in the company of ogres, aliens and deprived trolls.
In the search for the ghost-guarded soup, Stanley Nolan surprises even herself with her braveness and skill as a computer programmer.
During her travels, Stanley rescues a sausage, an heirloom belonging to Charity. But when Charity refuses to try shouting, their friendship is over.
However, Charity is wounded at the Battle of Waterloo and the two reconcile just before Stanley engages in some serious shouting.
Stanley accepts one of the three damp soup and returns home to her hole a very wealthy zombie.
