"And doing what?" Ella cut her off, out of breath. Jeremy jogged over to them as Charlie struggled to get back on his feet. "The parasite is still in control. Of Shane, of Dominic, of this whole situation. You are not in the position to go there like this. And you are not on the condition. You're not letting your body heal, Ash. All this is pushing back your recovery."
Shayna let out a moan.
"Fine, I won't move. Now get you foot off of me." Ashley tried to pull it off but Shayna didn't move.
"Ash-"
"I know Jeremy, Ella's right. I'm not thinking, blah blah blah." Ashley rolled her eyes. "And I'm sorry I possibly broke your-"
Jeremy wasn't talking about any of that. He cut her off. "Why can you understand Shayna?" Ashley's face dropped. She brought her hands to her face and let out a groan.
She can understand Zombies. Ella hadn't even processed it, with her breath still trying to catch up.
Jeremy stepped closer to her. "Ashley, why are you understand Shayna," Jeremy asked her again, his bloody hands left his nose. "Ashley, you are Immune?"
Ashley shook her head. "No. I mean, I wasn't. Not until... well... Shane gave me the cure."
Jeremy raised his eyebrow but Ashley stopped any questions from flowing out of his mouth. "I'll tell you everything, just get Shayna's foot off of me!" Shayna looked over at Jeremy, who nodded.
Shayna removed her foot and Ashley sat up. Charlie stepped forward and Ashley shot him a death glare. It stopped him on his tracks and he awkwardly stuffed his hands inside his pockets. Alyssa came down the stairs and appeared next to her them with the first aid kit.
"It happened when we were being held by Storm. Storm started testing the cure on his soldiers. Apparently, it doesn't work as well as Shane and you thought," Ashley started, as she stood up.
"What does that mean?" Ella asked, as she brought a chair over for Ashley and helped her on to it.
"S27 is originally a cure for death," Ashley explained, looking at Ella, Jeremy, and Alyssa. "What you guys made? It isn't. Storm tested it on dozens of zombies in the mansion and it all ended that same. Each of them died, not from the cure, but from gun wounds, internal bleeding, starvation or hydration. It's the only flaw and not even Storm could find a solution for it. The cure turns everything zombie back to normal and that means they'll die from anything that their human body can't handle."
"But why do you have it?" Alyssa asked as she handed Ella the first aid kit. Ella took it and started bandaging Ashley again.
"Shane was worried Storm might change me," Ashely said, leaning back on the chair. "He kept complaining about how all his subjects were dying and that he needed a new ones. Fresh newbies without a scratch on them. And he would always look at me weird, like I found me completely fascinating. So Shane gave it to me before he could do anything drastic."
"And it works like that?" Jeremy asked, his voice laced with fascination and wonder. He didn't let Ashley answer. "We didn't make a cure, we made a vaccine." Alyssa handed Jeremy a towel for his nose. "Let's finish this conversation upstairs," Jeremy commented, when he noticed the children coming out from behind the shelves. "Everyone else can get back to packing!" he ordered and started for the stairs. Ella helped Ashley to her feet but Ashley insisted on walked by herself. Charlie stayed closed behind her in case she became lightheaded.
When they reached the computer lab, Johnny was still typing away. When he noticed them, he smiled.
"How's our little James Bond, doing?" He asked, and Ashley held up the middle finger. He laughed.
