Chapter 23
When Alyssa woke up it was morning. She looked around her trying to figure out what had happen while she was gone.
The tree house was almost completely gone. She watched as the older guys looked around the remains of it. They were probably looking for bodies. She wondered where Dominic was.
"He's helping the boys." At the sound of Ava's voice Alyssa turns. She still has black smoke all over her face. "There was a lot of... bodies to remove." Her voice chokes in the end.
Alyssa stood up and hugged her and Ava hugged her back.
"I'm so sorry," Alyssa whispered to her. Ava only nodded and hugged her tighter.
"No one has seen Sky since last night," Ava said as she pulled away. "Will's trying not to looked worried but like- what happened really got to her. I mean it got to all of us but she was-" She stopped, taking a deep breath.
"It's ok, Ava," Alyssa said, running her hand through Ava's hair. "I'll go get Dominic and we'll look for her, ok? Ava nodded and suddenly she heard Wes call her name. Ava smiled at him and Alyssa noticed.
"I think someone's waiting for you," Alyssa said, smiling at her. Ava blushed slightly before running to Wes.
Alyssa looked around before finding Will. She ran to him. He, just like everyone else, was still covered in ashes.
"Will!" Alyssa called out, getting his attention. "Have you seen Dominic?" Will wiped the sweat off his forehead. They must have been working extremely hard because the cold from the little snow that fell yesterday was still in the air.
"He's by the lake," Will responded. "We're burying the dead bodies there." He paused for a second. "There were so many..." Alyssa kept a sharp pain of guilt on her chest. This was all their fault. If they hadn't stayed here, Storm would've never had a reason to bother them. She had to find Dominic.
"I"m sorry," She said, with a feeling like she was going to have to be saying that a lot more. Will sent her a smile.
"It's not your fault-"
No it is.
"But I'm glad you see your ok," he added, placing a hand on her shoulder before walking away. Right. I passed out, Alyssa remembered.
She wrapped her arms around herself, feeling cold as she walked towards the lake. Most of the older teens were here, a large group of them being boys, were carrying burnt bodies by two. On the ground there were freshly new dirt on a few places. Alyssa lost count of how many burial spots there were. She walked over to where the oldest man there was standing, with a shovel.
"Dominic," She said, getting his attention. Dominic spun around with a panic look on his face.
"A," he said, moving so he was standing in front of the hole. "You're awake."
Alyssa knew that he was doing. He was covering the body he was currently burying.
"Dominic move-"
"I really don't think you wanna see-"
She didn't let him finish as she walked by him, now standing in front of the hole and staring down at the body. It was of a little girl, her head was tilted to the side, covering her face with her blonde hair. She couldn't be an older than six. She was missing skin all over her arm and it was covered in dry blood. Alyssa stared at it as she felt Dominic come up behind her.
"You're shivering," he comments. Alyssa felt the tears coming. She wasn't shaking from the cold. Dominic takes off his leather jacket and wrapped it around her. As soon as Alyssa felt the warmth of his jacket, she turned around and buried her head into his chest. Then she started to cry. Dominic started to pass his fingers through her hair.
