I smacked his arm and pressed the button with an R on it, ignoring his suggestive comment. He continued to stare at me as the elevator ascended, waiting for me to tell him what we were doing. The doors slid open and I tugged his arm to bring him out of the elevator and into the open air.
"You brought us to the roof?"
"No I brought us to the basement, Calum," I said with an eyebrow raised.
"Sorry, I was just saying," he said with his hands up in mock surrender and a small laugh.
"I know," I told him as I joined in the laughter, purposely bumping into his side to make him stumble a bit.
"Stop!" He said, still laughing.
"Stop what?" I asked as we reached the low wall at the edge of the roof.
"Being so cute," he said with a sweet smile.
Unsure of what I could say without sounding like a malfunctioning weirdo, I just let out a breathy laugh and brought him to a bench at the corner of the roof.
"So, what are we doing up here?" He asked me, sitting down with me.
"Nothing in particular. Just enjoying ourselves."
"Mmm. And how do you suggest we do that?" He hugged me from the side, burying his face in the crook of my neck.
I leaned my head to the side, resting it on top of his and wrapping my arms loosely around him.
"Just talk. Look at the stars. Relax for a bit."
"How did you find this place?"
"My roommate works here. She told me about how nice the roof is when I came to visit her at the front desk one night. When I came to check it out, I ended up falling asleep and waking up at like 3:30am. I realized how beautiful and peaceful it is up here at this time of night. So now if I'm stressed or I can't sleep, this is where I come."
"You're right, it is nice up here," he said with his lips against my shoulder, rubbing slow circles into my side with his thumbs. I really need to pull myself together and not embarrass myself by screaming or peeing myself like it felt like I was about to do.
"There's a lot of stars out tonight," I whispered as a ran my hand up and down his arm.
"Yeah, there are," he agreed as he moves his head off my shoulder to look up. "Do you know anything about constellations?"
"Hell no," I laughed with him. "All I know is the Big Dipper, but it's nice looking at all the stars anyways."
"It is," he said, still looking at the sky in wonder. "Come here." He stood me up off the bench with him and walked me to the middle of the roof, before laying his sweatshirt down on the concrete and laying on top of it. I laid down next to him but he pouted and pulled me so that I was laying on top of him, both of us looking up at the sky as he wrapped his arms around my waist.
"That's better," he whispered.
"Yeah, it is," I sighed.
As we just laid there looking up at the stars in content, he started humming something that sounded so familiar but I couldn't quite place it.
"What song is that?" I whispered, afraid that mentioning his wonderful humming would make him stop.
"Never Be," he whispered back, seeming deep in thought.
"How did I not realize that oh my gosh. That's like my favorite song," I told him.
"Really? I never really knew people liked it that much."
"Well, I don't know about other people they never really talk about it much. I just know that I think it's the best song you guys have ever released."
"Stand up," he whispered.
"O-okay," I said as I stood up, caught off guard. Was I crushing him, or making him uncomfortable by letting him see a little bit of my fan side?
He just smiled at me, the corners of his eyes crinkling as he stood up and pulled his phone out of his pocket, doing some things on it before setting it on the bench and walking back over to me.
"May I have this dance," he asked as he grabbed my hand and bowed down slightly to place a gentle kiss on it.
Not sure what to say to his adorable and romantic gesture, I just giggled and nodded my head.
He pulled me into him and wrapped his hands around my waist while I put mine around his neck.
"Siri, hit play," he said in the direction of the bench. A few seconds after he said that, Never Be started playing from his phone's speakers, and he grinned down at me before pulling me closer and starting to slow dance, softly singing into my hair. This moment was so perfect and amazing it honestly made me want to cry (in a good way).
The song ended but we kept dancing, and the next one on his playlist came on. When I realized it was If I Could Fly by One Direction, I let out a strange noise that was like a combination between a gasp, a laugh, and a sob.
"Hey, are you ok?" Calum asked me and backed away slightly so he could see my face, as his was full of concern.
"Yeah I'm good. This is just really nice and I love it and my two favorite songs in the entire world came on right in a row and this one always makes me cry."
"I'm sorry, I didn't know."
"Calum, I just said it's one of my two favorite songs," I said with a small laugh.
"Oh. Well, I'm glad you're having fun," he smiled at me looking relieved.
I leaned back into him and wrapped my arms tighter around him, holding him close as we danced around the rooftop under the stars.
If anyone were to ask me what I think happiness, I would describe this moment. Happiness is slow dancing to your favorite music with the person you're falling for way too fast. Happiness is being under the stars but barely even noticing because you're too wrapped up in your own little world, too wrapped up in each other's arms, and too wrapped up in each other's hearts. Happiness is right here, right now. Happiness is being with Calum, and I never wanted it to end.
