GRAY AND ZACH WAITED IN line as Kenna worked her magic on the plan she was trying to put in play. "The soft tissue is preserved because the iron in the dinosaur's blood generates free radicals, and those are highly reactive." Gray was telling Zach as they waited. But Zach wasn't paying any attention. Instead, he was watching as Kenna smiled flirtatiously at one of the two workers for the Gyrospheres. There was one still at the little podium giving out Gyrospheres, but the other was will Kenna. "The proteins and the cell membranes get all mixed up and act as a natural preservative. DNA can survive for millennia that way. Even if the amber mines dry up, they'll still have bones-"
"Shut up." Zach stopped him. Kenna and the worker were conversing, but she had just placed her hand over his and she was batting her eyelashes at him in a way Zach had never seen before. She was beautiful. Well, she was always beautiful but Zach was only really considering it then.
Gray, slightly upset, was looking in the direction Zach was staring and sighed when he noticed him looking at Kenna. "What do you think's gonna happen from you just staring at her?" Gray asked loudly, and a group of girls near them giggled, sending Zach's confidence lower.
"Thanks, man." Zach acknowledged his brother's actions sarcastically.
"Your welcome." Gray smiled.
"Thank you so much!" Kenna grinned at the worker before walking over to Gray and Zach again. "Well, I was just talking to your partner," she informed the shy-looking male working the Gyrospheres. "And he said it would be okay for me to sit in with my two friends over here." She told him. "I mean, I know we could probably just take a four-seated one but it's just not really the same, is it?"
"Okay." The boy said simply. "Enjoy the side." Kenna grinned, winking at Gray before leading the boys into the Gyrosphere. The number of the seats were 07, ironically Kenna's lucky number and the day of her birth. "Gray, you can just sit in my lap. I'm sure you don't want to sit on your brother." She teased and Gray nodded, settling in her lap before clipping the seatbelt around both of them. Zach just sat down next to the two, unaffected.
So maybe Kenna hadn't quite thought that through. In his excitement, Gray kept squirming around and not really thinking about what Kenna might be going through, being his chair. Sighing quietly, Kenna moved so that Gray could press closer to the glass of the Gyrosphere, but it didn't help much.
"Regretting your wonderful idea?" Zach muttered, noticing her discomfort. Raising an eyebrow, Kenna looked over at him.
"And what exactly is your problem?" she inquired.
"I just don't think that flirting your way to what you want is the right way to get through your life," Zach spoke, his words sounding far harsher than he had intended them to. Kenna's mouth opened in surprise.
"I've worked hard for what I've gotten." Kenna said quietly. "I've been working three jobs, on top of extra curricular activities, because that looks good on a college application." She said. "Did you know that half of what I earn goes to helping my Mom with the rent? Because she's been having a lot of trouble with that recently."
Zach was surprised that in the year he hadn't been close to Kenna, her life could have started to fall apart that much. "I've been deciding between two colleges. Well it's likely I won't be going to any of them, just because I can't afford it." Kenna confessed, words she had hoped she would never have to say out loud; despite them constantly plaguing her thoughts.
"Hey, there." a voice coming from a small screen cut through the silence like a knife. "I'm Jimmy Fallon." Kenna took a deep breath and looked at the screen, seeing the comedian standing there in a lab coat with goggles on. "Welcome aboard the Gyrosphere, an amazing machine made possible by science. Your safety is our main concern. Which is why you're behind our invisible barrier system, which protects you from things like Dilophosaurus venom." In the video, Jimmy ran into some flasks and something exploded, probably the 'Dilophosaurus venom'
"One drop of this can paralyze you, so watch out." Jimmy added, now covered in soot. "Is this real?" he asked someone off-screen. "It is?" and then he fell to the ground in a funny manner. "And for added protection, each vehicle is surrounded by aluminum oxynitride glass. So tough, it can stop a 50-caliber bullet." He shot a sample of the glass and it went straight through. Kenna sighed. "The Gyroscopic technology will keep you upright at all times, so you've got nothing to worry about..."
"Where are they?" Gray complained, looking around for the dinosaurs that seemed to somehow disappear when they came.
"Oh man." Zach sighed out. But then, they saw them. The gorgeous Triceratopses, flanked by some Ankylosaurus, Apatosaurus, Parasaurolophus and Stegosaurus. All the dinosaurs were herbivores for safety reasons, but still pretty incredible.
Kenna found a way to loosen the straps of the seatbelt a little and looked out the Gyrosphere. It rolled past the dinosaurs, in Zach's command, and Kenna, Zach and Gray got to watch the incredible animals up close.
An abrupt beeping cut them out of their ecstatic mood. "Due to technical difficulties all our exhibits are now closed. Please disembark all rides and return to the resort." An announcer said over the Jimmy Fallon safety video.
Kenna felt disappointed, but nobody looked it more than Gray. To add to it, he let out an upset breath of air and Kenna took his hand reassuringly.
"Come on, we can stay out a couple more minutes," Zach suggested, seeing how upset the two people that meant most to him were. Although Kenna was better at hiding it, probably for Gray's sake, his younger brother looked completely shattered.
"But they said it was closed." Gray reminded Zach as if he didn't know that.
"Aunt Claire gave us special wristbands, right?" Zach motioned to his wristband with his eyes, and Gray considered it. "We're VIP, dude." He added.
"Zach," Kenna began. "I don't think it's a good idea."
"Come on, Harvard." Zach grinned, looking from Kenna to Gray. "It'll be fun." He added. Reluctantly, Kenna and Gray nodded and Zach flicked his wrist up, making the Gyrosphere speed up along with the dinosaurs around it. Kenna grinned at the action. Who gets to run with dinosaurs on a regular day? Apparently, us.
In between enjoying everything, Zach's mood was ruined when his phone rang, and he saw it was Claire's contact. "Hey, Claire." He greeted, picking up his blue phone with a slightly hostile tone.
"Zach, thank God." Claire breathed out, much to Zach's confusion. "Is-" and then the rest was complete Gibberish.
"I can't really hear you. We're in the hamster ball." Zach said, making Kenna glance over at him.
"Gyrosphere." She sang, and he rolled his eyes at her correction.
"Zach, listen to me. I need you to—"
"Hello?" Zach said, the static sound from his phone completely blocking out what Claire was trying to tell him. "Hello?" he took the phone from his ear and looked at the call when it ended. With a shrug, he put the phone in his pocket.
And then they went on towards an area with an open fence. The number 5 was on two beams that would have been where the door was connected to, but the door was opened.
"What happened here?" Zach asked quietly, moving the Gyrosphere slowly towards the opened gate. "Dude." Kenna sighed.
"I really wish you wouldn't call me dude." She admitted, which would have made everyone laugh if they hadn't been so curious and freaked out at the same time.
"Off-road." The words that fell from Zach's lips were excited like he wanted nothing more than to keep going. Which Kenna had a very bad feeling about?
"But they told us to go back," Gray replied responsibly, also sounding worried.
"I'm just worried you're not getting the full Jurassic World experience," Zach said, using a lame excuse to go in. At the unassertive look on Gray and Kenna's faces, he held a finger to his lips. "Shhhhh." He said before he directed the Gyrosphere onwards.
