It was lunchtime, and Hajime was sat in his new homeroom with non other than Nagito.
After tiredly retrieving his lunch from his new locker, Nagito had jumped at the chance to enjoy a talkative lunch time with Hajime and hopefully the other guys. But so far, it's just been Nagito and Hajime, eating quietly together at one of the tables.
So much for bro code.
Hajime poked and prodded at his rice, his chin rested in his hand as he stared at the rice intently. He sighed an exhausted sigh before giving up on eating and glancing at the bright blue sky outside.
Nagito noticed Hajime wasn't happy, which made him unhappy, and nonetheless confused as to why he was so depressed. Nagito swallowed his food before speaking for the first time in the past five minutes, "Hajime, is everything alright?"
Hajime agreeably hummed in reply, still with his eyes focused on the window, those green eyes of his shimmering in the light like leaves in a hazel pond.
He was just wondering how on earth he'll get used to all this newness surrounding him. What people will think of him as their new classmate. Everyone's made their friends already.
It's not often Hajime thinks this deeply about matters like these. But he's only briefly met everyone in his class, he didn't get a chance to speak to anyone in his first two classes because of the heavy amount of work they were doing - maths and science and literature aren't much simpler in this school than his last one - though he didn't have to do much work with it being his first day. And he didn't mind that.
Even in the break in between lessons, he just sat on his phone like some loner in the library, not wanting to cause a fuss.
If his parents were here, they'd be scolding him for not making any new friends from his class.Hajime felt Nagito's pale green eyes on him, and turned his head to face him. Nagito frowned like an old man. Hajime chuckled tiredly, "What's that face for?" He sighed.
Nagito shook his head before closing his empty lunch box. "If you're worried about fitting in, or making friends, or anything socially related, don't worry about it," he said in a matter-of-fact. Hajime huffed, returning to his grumpy state, "Easy for you to say, you get along with everyone. Your friends with everyone here."
"Yeah, and your one of those friends."
Hajime stuttered, his eyes widening with surprise. Nagito shrugged like his kindness was nothing much, "That's unless you don't want to be friends, which I'd understand with me being trash-"
"Don't," Hajime warned, shaking his head.
Nagito stood up and smiled down at Hajime, "You'll do just fine. This room is about to be filled with students from class for lunch, we just got here early. I've gotta go the library to check up on something, go speak to people okay?"
Hajime nodded and Nagito glanced around the room, though it was empty, before whispering to Hajime "Especially give Nanami an impression to remember."
Hajime growled lowly at Nagito, regretting feeling complementary thoughts towards him on being his 'friend'.
Just as Nagito said, more and more people started to come into the room as he left. That wide Byakuya guy came stomping through the door with Gundham trailing behind him along with...Nanami.
Hajime moved his attention back to his food and started eating to distract himself. Why he was nervous? He didn't know. Though he's sure Nanami wouldn't bother sitting next to him. And she didn't, she sat across the room as more of Hajime's class filled the room, giving it an exciting buzz. Everyone was talking and smiling and even that grumpy blonde boy, Fuyuhiko? was smiling with Peko.
Hajime noticed that someone sat on the desk behind him, so he turned around to look at who it was and found Souda, the one with the pink hair and scruffy beanie, sat down tucking into his lunch. Hajime cleared his throat before bravely deciding to strike up a conversation.
"Souda, is it-?"
"AAAAA!" he cried, nearly throwing his lunch in the air. Hajime nearly had a heart attack. Why was this guy screaming?
"Souda!" Sonia scolded from where she was sat, next to Akane (who was eating her food like a beast) "Don't scare him!"
Souda stuttered a nervous apology to Sonia before groaning, "Dude!" He held his head in exhaustion, and Hajime wondered if this troubled man was prone to reactions like these. "Don't just scare me like that."
"Sorry?" Hajime mumbled. Souda cleaned some dust off his blazer before speaking again. "Hajime right?" He confirmed. Hajime nodded and smiled lightly, unsure of what to say next.
"Well, welcome to the class! Why don't you come sit opposite me? you'll hurt your neck looking at me like that," Souda smiled his shark like teeth with glee.
Hajime did as suggested and moved his chair opposite of Souda, bringing his lunch with him and glad somebody (aside from Nagito) wanted his company.
The two talked of general things whilst eating their lunches; hobbies, students, things to do in the town etcetera. Souda, though an exaggerated character, seemed like a guy who only meant well, and that made Hajime feel like he'd be able to befriend his class mates easier than he first believed.
"Good afternoon, Hajime."
Hajime slowly looked up to find Nanami smiling gently down at him. At least she remembered his name...
Hajime tried to smile back, "Oh hi Nanami, you doing okay?" He asked, seemingly "cool", to which she nodded in reply. Nanami held a small bento box under her arm but used both hands to hold her precious (in all meanings of the word) pink console.
Nanami thought before turning her gaze from Hajime to Souda. "Souda, Ibuki has been looking everywhere for you, to work on your partnered science project-"
"AW JEEZ I FORGOT!" he exclaimed, his eyes widening in terror.
A booming laugh was heard from Akane, who was using one hand to hold her stomach and the other to point at Souda. "You are so dead! That punk princess is gonna kick your-!"
"Shut up!" Souda whined as he bolted out the classroom. Hajime chuckled as he ran to find Ibuki, then found Nanami had sat in his seat in front of Hajime. Hajime didn't expect her to sit with him, maybe it's because he said he liked Gala Omega.
She looked up from her game and smiled at Hajime. This seemed to send a chill down his spine and he didn't like it, why wouldn't he get a chill when Souda smiled at him? It was weird; he was out of his comfort zone with Nanami. So to avoid any more feelings like this, he ate the last of his lunch and stood up.
Nanami tilted yet head to one side, those pink sleepy eyes of hers looking puzzled.
Hajime sighed, "I, uh, don't know much about the school so I was going to have a look around to familiarize myself with the building," he muttered quickly.
Hajime had expected the pink haired girl to react to this, but that didn't seem to happen at first. Instead, he was just scrutinised under her confused expression.
It wasn't until she smiled and stood up from her seat, console in hand, that she spoke. "I could show you round, if you like?" She offered eagerly.
Hajime couldn't get a grip on her personality. She was often thoughtful and sleepy, but also seemed kind and shyly enthusiastic. Whatever it was, Hajime couldn't help but like it.
He scratched the back of his neck awkwardly as he realised he was staring at her a little too long. "Uh, that's fine with me," he muttered before gulping, "I guess some company would be nice, thanks."
Nanami nodded with one of the sweetest smiles Hajime had been greeted with today before the two left the room side by side and Sonia silently whispered to Akane about her new favourite ship.
I'm pleased with this result. I hope you guys are! Xx
