“Wendy?” I whispered, wiping my nose before sitting up a little straighter. He nodded, and looked into the jungle his eyes distant.

“Did you love her?” I asked, relief washing over me when he slowly shook his head. My hands fidged in my lap as I waited for him to continue, the silence in the air was nerve racking.

“No, I never loved her, not in the way I love Kaytee. She reminded me of my mother I think, and maybe I did even like her the way you liked Amanda, but it was in no way love. One time I was searching for an open window, just looking for something new, when I came across her house, the balcony window open. She was a story teller, you see, and I would come almost every week, just to listen to them. One night, I went into the room, wanting to get a little closer to her when she was asleep, but the dog ripped my shadow off.” he took a deep breath before continuing, his eyes growing more distant as he remembered.

“To make a long story short, she sewed my shadow back on, and I brought her and her brothers to Neverland. She helped me defeat Hook, well, kind of, but she was the kind of girl who wanted to grow up, for what reason, I will never understand. She asked me about love, but I didn't know what that was, because I never loved her. So I took her back to the Mainland, and I haven't see her since.” He ran his fingers through his thick hair.

“For a while, I felt like half of me was missing, and I thought that maybe I really did love her, but it was too late when I went back, she was already eighty years old, she had grandkids, and nieces and nephews. So I thought I'd never love anyone, I didn't want love anyway, I'm a boy who refuses to grow up. Who refused to love.” turning to me, he looked me straight in the eyes.

“But you want to know how I figured out that I never loved her?” I nodded my head and waited anxiously.

“Because she left me, and I refused to grow up for her. And I know you never loved Amanda because I said the exact same thing to Wendy that you did when Amanda told you she wanted to leave.” he smirked, “I guess you have more of me than you think, eh?” he chuckled lowly before becoming serious again, “Love, Sammy, is willing to do anything for that girl. Love is knowing that if she wanted something, anything at all, you would go to edge of Hell and back just to get it for her. ” he smiled again, looking up to see my Mother leaning against the hollowed tree, though I didn't even know she was there.

“If your mother told me at this very moment that she wanted us to go back to the Mainland and grow up, I would do it in a heartbeat. Just to make her happy. I would do anything for her, and when you find your girl, you'll be the same way.” he chuckled standing up and walking across the clearing, winding an arm securely around her waist. I smirked, making a whipping noise, and we laughed, before Mom turned and whispered in his ear. His smile wiped off his face, replaced with a solemn grimace before nodding.

“What's wrong?” I asked worriedly.

“Nothing.” he mumbled before walking down a tunnel into the home. I cocked an eyebrow at my mother who had the same grieving look on her face.

“Amanda's gone. You may come inside when you're ready, sweety.” she whispered, before kissing my forehead, and following after my father. I sighed, running my fingers through my hair, gently tugging at my roots. What a messed up day...
