The Millenial Spirit

Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
1 Timothy 4:12 KJV

You've heard it a thousand times. Stupid people accusing everyone under the age of ______ of being a self-entitled, lazy, superliberal, stuck up "Millenial."

It's a natural part of generational differences. We're different than the earlier generation, and so some insecure people among them choose to bash us. While I agree that some things they accuse our generation do have merit, the idea that everyone under.. what is it, 20ish?.. the idea that everyone under 20 is a self-centered SJW brat that expects everything handed to them is ridiculous.

But yet, in the church, I see something that is painfully similar to the millenial stereotype, and I'm guilty of it as well.

You see, I was at the hospital with my mom all night last Saturday. There was a man that walked up to me, out of everyone in the hospital, ME, and asked if I could spare some change. He just found out he needed to eat something before 12 for his surgery. I went over there and bought him chips, candy bars, etc;.

He was so nervous. He made comments like "Oh God, I can't believe I'm about to have surgery." When we sat down, I could see him on the other side of the small room. His head was buried in his face, he was coughing and making various "sick noises". He was about as nervous as anyone should be, what was likely his first surgery.

I felt God telling me to pray for him. Just.. say "Hey buddy, you said you were about to go in surgery, can I pray for you?" And say a few things, ask God to help him in the surgery in Jesus' name, you know. It very well could've changed how the surgery went. At the very least, he could have gone to surgery in faith. Nobody should have to go through that scared.

But I froze. "Wait a minute God, there's people here. Wait a minute God, I don't want to make a scene. Wait a minute God, I don't want to make anybody uncomfortable."

God had even hyped me up all day, leading me to an amazing NAYC sermon about allowing faith to guide us by Micheal Ensey, as well as others, and I really got into the spirit praying about that earlier that day. But yet I was so unwilling to actually put myself out there. When I finally got through every block I could possibly set up for myself, I started to get up to do it.. and the nurse called him to the doctors office, never to be seen by me again.

This is part of what I'll call the Millenial Spirit. You see, I do alot of praying that God will use me and this and that, and wonder why I don't see myself in ministry as often as I do. Then when push comes to shove, when I get a real opportunity, it's not what I want. It's uncomfortable.

I'm hungry enough for revival to beg my Daddy to go to the store and buy it for me, but I sure don't want to work.

I'm the spiritual equivalent of that totally capable 28 year old mooching off his mom for no reason other than not having to face the real world.

I'm not sure I've ever written a Weekly Message that stings me so much.

I felt I would be hypocritical to make a message like this without admitting I'm guilty.

But this Millenial Spirit is a huge reason why we don't have revival, why we don't have a changed world.

We want spiritual gifts, anointing, great church, revival in our communities and countries, and to have spiritually successful lives, but we don't want the labor or the responsibility.

I'm literally writing this with the intention of making every reader say "Ouch!" We all need conviction, repentance, and correction to be a daily part of our lives, but I can personally testify that I would rather say "Oh that doesn't apply to me" during sermons, bible studies and prayers.

We say that we want to be used by God, but we don't really want the responsibility of taking care of every soul. I mean, that pulpit looks nice, and I can lay hands and pray for the other Christians in church I know once in a blue moon.. man, I really don't want to do that in public.

God isn't familiar with our philosophy. In God's Word, Paul often compares the spiritual walk to sports. We are running the good race. We need to spiritually work out, spiritually train our heart, lungs, and muscles to make the run, and make it well, and not just expect to make it because we want to make it. He talks alot about spiritual responsibility. If we sin, we can't blame the weather and our upbringing. We have to go and admit that we allowed our flesh to get out of control and we chose to sin, and repent before God.

Your Mission: We need to pray the Millenial Spirit out. Just because we are Christians, we aren't entitled to whatever we want for free. The cross was the exception for spiritual gifts given to us, not the rule.

But there is hope. We aren't just self-entitled brats who want everything for free. I see alot of fire, alot of passion in my young brothers and sisters in Christ. We want more than to make money and keel over dead. And when we accept the responsibility God gave us over ourselves and the souls of the people He has placed in our life, when we decide to pray, fast, study the Bible, and give our 210% to fulfill our hunger for more, God will take us the rest of the way and we'll have everything we need to change the world.

If you want to see what this is all about for yourself, you can find a church that preaches the Holy Ghost RIGHT WHERE YOU LIVE using the church locator at upci.org!
