to you, everyone else had accents. but to everyone else, you were the odd one out with your distinct irish accent.

switching high schools in the middle of a semester was rough, but you had also just switched countries. with your father's new job, you moved from ireland to the nowhere land that was hawkins, indiana.

holding your books close as your walked through the doors, you didn't know how you were going to make it through the day at your new school.

but then you met nancy in your first period. she introduced you to her boyfriend, steve. by the end of the first day, you three were already really close.

nancy also introduced you to jonathan. why was everyone in your new school so attractive, you found yourself asking.

by the second week, you four were inseparable. when you first arrived in america, you thought that you would stick out like a sore thumb and somehow suffer through. but you met some amazing people in that small town.

walking out of school on friday of your second week at school, you had your first run in with billy hargrove.

he was talking to a smaller girl by his car— the girl had the same color hair as you making you smile. there weren't many gingers around these parts.

walking past, you made eye contact with him. god, were his eyes beautiful.

the next week, he talked to you.

"i'm billy. billy hargrove. you might've heard of me," he said confidently. smiling at him, you shifted your books to your hip.

"i'm y/n," you said simply. you waited for his reply.

yet, the arrogance slipped from his eyes as he realized you hadn't immediately fell under his "bad boy" charm.

suddenly, nancy came up behind you, taking you by the elbow, and steered you away from billy. you looked over you shoulder to see him looking at your departing figure.

"nancy, what the hell," you questioned.

she turned to face you and said, "he's bad. not the kind of bad that can be ever good. leave him alone, y/n," she said before continuing to walk.

the next day, you saw steve and billy in the gymnasium. sweat dripped from them and a knife could've cut through their testosterone levels.

you couldn't hear what they were talking about until you heard steve say clearly, "leave y/n alone."

you stood up from the bleachers, dumbfounded. what was happening?

billy pushed steve, making him fall onto the hard floor.

jumping down for the bleachers, you ran and stood between them.

"billy, stop," you said, your fingers touching his bare chest.

his eyes snapped to you— a look you had never seen anyone wear before.

"stop," you said again, your tone low.

he shut his eyes and growled before walking away.

the next few weeks, you stayed clear of billy. the look he had given in that gym... it had scared you. then, he met you outside the school doors.

"i'm sorry about what happened," he spoke low. some people stopped as they walked by, overhearing what he said.

you nodded but refused to look him in the eyes again.

"y/n," he said, tilting your chin up. "i'm sorry. i'll leave them alone, i swear." the sincerity in his voice made you instantly forgive him.

by the end of the month, you two were officially dating, and he hadn't bothered your friends or anyone else since.
