All troops scheduled to leave for boot camp during March had to immediately report to the recruitment office in down town New York. They had new detailed information for these men and it could not wait. The news was spread by newspaper and by letter to all of the men who applied to join the Continental Army. You would've been there even if you weren't with Aaron right now. At least you'd get to see Lafayette and John again for a couple minutes. Aaron was already on his way there with you since he had to report there today anyways.
When you arrived, a huge swarm of people were standing outside the building either waiting to be seen or to be sent off to camp. But there were four familiar boys who were sitting on a large plank that would be soon hulled away with many more soldiers. Only they weren't going today?
You walked over towards them, while Aaron went to see which stage coach he'd be leaving on.
"Herc, guys? What are you doing here? Why the gloom faces and the bags of..." You trailed off as you saw that they all had bags stuffed with clothes and other items. Your brother started to tear up. "Clothes", you finished yourself as Hercules hugged you tightly. You clinged to his back.
"Our leaves were changed today. The people that were going to leave today have our schedules, and we- we have theirs now. I hurried back home and got us all some clothes, cause I'll be damned if we thought we were going away today."
The thought of losing him was unbearable to you. He helped you and supported you when you thought you were crazy for believing you had a voice. He was your flesh and blood. It would be like losing a piece of you if he was slaughtered out there.
No more dirty dad jokes, tailored clothes, or bear hugs.
When you finally pulled away, you looked at John and the others. He flashed you a sad smile with some tears in his eyes. You hugged him and told him about all the essays you'd write and drawing you'd make when he got back.
Lafayette was a bit different in this situation. He was angry with the switch. No matter how many times he'd rant about her, no matter how many times he'd call her a serpent, he loved Adrienne. He loved her so much. He never said it much, but she was his "amour à couper le souffle ". (Breathtaking love) It'd be two months before she knew of his whereabouts. He never really even got to say goodbye to her in France.
"Connerie", he hissed under his breath and hugged you.
(Bullshit)
You turned to face the side of Hamilton's face. You pitied him. He had no one to wish him safety except for the people that he had just met a few weeks ago. No family, just what was enough to make something that resembled one. No one special to fight for on the other side of the war, except for the future.
"I know you dislike me." He perked his head at you with a raised eyebrow. "But you don't hate me." He quickly looked away, not wanting to talk to you. "You better come back safe and ready to argue with me again and talk about politics...if you think you can handle it." He chuckled dryly. "Just for that, I'll make absolute sure of it." You patted his shoulder like a father would and walked away.
You'd do it for years to come.
Someone came running up from behind you and picked you up into a warm hug. "You're really here!", he cried.
Who could forget about the insanely cool Cato, the free slave?
You turned around and hugged him back. 'I was hoping you were staying behind.' This boy was crying his heart out on your shoulder. "Did you actually think that I wasn't coming?" You felt his head nod. "News gets around about changes these days." He pulled away and faced you. Snot was running down from his nose and his cheeks were puffy and red. "Get out there and make some noise", you said encouragingly. He just gave you a toothy smile and kissed your forehead.
"March 20th lads to the stages for leave!"
That was their cue. Lafayette, Cato, John, and Alex scooted far into the front of the plank. Hercules stayed behind and looked at you. His smile broke your heart. He held your hand and kissed your cheek. "I love you", he quietly said. "I love you so much more", you said like it was a reflex. He ruffled your hair as he laughed while crying. Before too long, he unwillingly pulled away from you and ran to catch up with his ride. As he got on, more and more men piled on up until you couldn't see him or the rest of your boys anymore. Five more planks were loaded with men just like this one. Five others with wives and children begging and pleading for them not to go, but knowing that they're going anyways.
You watched them disappear into the distance of the early morning fog. Sniffling, you started to walk back home. The chirping birds filled the air with their voices. You hated to think that today of all days was the most sorrowful of the year.
The first day of spring was the day your family left.
**
The next dayYou closed the bakery for who knows how long it would be. This only the first day of them being gone. There was no word from Aaron, still. You felt guilty for leaving him behind at the office, but you had a lot more on your mind. How were you even going to function knowing that your baby brother will be facing danger every single freaking day now?
You were in your bed with a batch of waffles that you made two minutes ago. They were your comfort food and right now, you needed comfort. "T-This beauty is-is so g-good..!", you cried while eating it. Isn't that a sight for sore eyes.
Then there was a knock heard at your window. You thought is was just some bird, so you let it go. There was another knock. You groaned while getting up to see what it was. You moved he curtains and saw Aaron waving through the window. You quickly opened the window and pulled him up. He fell face first to the floor, but at least he wasn't dead.
The rest of the day was filled with the two of you reading silently to yourselves in peace. It might not have seemed like much of a comforting day, but to you, it was more than what you could ever ask for. You were reading sheet music from Bach, while Aaron was reading about Martin Luther.
No words were needed to discuss that before Aaron left, both of you would be spending as much time with each other as possible.
(This chapter totally wasn't sprinkled with Stranger Things references. I have school in 4 hours. I need sleep. What the hell am I doing?)
