Ethan often brought his girlfriend over. Not only that, he would invite Nate and his girlfriend too. I didn't like being around Anna, I didn't like hearing her. She casually complained like it was the only thing she knew how to do.
How Nate dealt with her, nobody knew. Every time she spoke my eyes rolled. Something about her just irritated me so much that I couldn't even stand it. There was no reason for me to be jealous because I didn't even like him. As in, I wasn't romantically interested in him...if I could've been at my age.
So naturally, just to annoy them, I invited Melanie over.
Melanie was my best friend of four years now. Melanie was beautiful, to say the least. She had dark skin, shiny eyes, and her hair was full of hundreds if not thousands of spirals. She always had acrylics attached to her nails, she told me she liked not having to grow her own nails out. She was also a smart girl, she had straight A's and had nearly every single boy at our school wishing they could date her.
My fourteenth birthday had passed nearly two months ago and her's was approaching quickly. It was a relatively normal day for the two of us, we were sitting on my bedroom floor with music playing maybe a bit too loudly.
"So," Melanie began. "What's going on with Flynn?" I scrunched up my nose as I thought about it. Flynn was a mildly attractive boy in my science class. He was a few months older than me and his eyes, even though they were a bright green, seemed a bit dull. In reality, he seemed dull.
"I don't know." I shrugged. "We've been texting." A smile spread across Melanie's face.
"He likes you." She told me. "You should really give him a chance. And he's popular. Just imagine that."
"I don't know if I like him though," I replied, "for some reason, I just haven't liked anyone. It's weird, but maybe it's because I don't try?" I raised my eyebrow at her and she nodded.
"Take a chance and you'll probably like it." She said matter-of-factly.
The door opened and both of us looked up to find my brother. I rolled my eyes and glared at him.
"What do you want?"
"If you don't turn this damn music down, I'm going to strangle you." He growled. "I can't even concentrate."
"Well, I think that's just on you, not my music." I retorted, standing up and walking over to him and pushing him out of my doorway. I looked up and made eye contact with Nate, and moved away from Ethan. "Yeah, yeah, I'll turn it down." I cleared my throat and turned back around to close my door.
I walked over to my stereo and turned it down, nearly falling back onto the floor. I could feel Melanie's gaze evaluating me as I sighed.
"Who was with him?" She asked me. "Was it Sam? He's hot."
"Mel, no." I groaned. "It was just Nate."
"That tall boy that's always with your brother?" She frowned.
"Uh, yeah, that one. Why?"
"Oh my God!" She exclaimed, taking me off guard as I looked at her with wide eyes.
"What?" I had to yell over her squeals for her to hear me. She was really excited about something and I couldn't begin to process what it is.
"You like him! You like your brother's best friend!" She seemed like she was living for that like she found humor in something I was going to completely, one hundred percent going to deny. There was no way I liked Nate. Him of all people?
