My fifteenth birthday party was a whirl of rushing people and pretty colors. There weren't very many people at my party - as in, just Melanie, my mom, Ethan and his friends. The day started like any other day. Thankfully, my party fell on a Saturday so there wasn't much holding Melanie back from coming over as early as possible.
Melanie knew for a long time that I had a crush on Nate. It was obvious to pretty much everyone except for him. My brother was aware of my crush and when Nate wasn't around, he would tease me for it. In turn, I would roll my eyes and send him away, denying every one of his accusations.
But I did. I loved Nate.
Nate and I were the last two in the kitchen. I was looking at the cake that was pretty much mangled at this point and I smiled. I only had one of my friends at this party, yet for some reason, I was so happy. I didn't remember what it was like to be this happy anymore.
"It looks like you're having a good time." Nate walked next to me, leaning against the counter with his arms crossed over his chest. He smelled vaguely of frosting and the cologne he must've put on hours before.
"Yeah." I smiled at him. "I am."
"Good." He replied simply. "It's your birthday. Gotta live it up, you know?"
"It's not like I turned twenty-one or something." I scoffed jokingly, nudging his arm. He smiled widely at me and I felt my chest tighten. I'd recently come to terms with how I felt for Nate and I didn't care anymore. It's not like there was any harm in it.
"Soon enough you will." He bit down on his bottom lip. "You shouldn't want to grow up so much."
"Stop," I scrunched up my nose. "You sound like my mother."
"She's right. Being an adult sucks." He laughed softly.
"It can't be that bad," I argued. "You don't have a curfew, you can go out and party, you can date whoever you want, you're quite lucky."
"That's not entirely true." He replied. "I can't date whoever I want. I would be dating someone else if I was allowed to."
"Who?"
"It's a secret." He faced me, standing more than close enough to me as he looked down to see me.
"That's not fair! Tell me." I hit his arm lightly and he laughed.
"If I did that, it wouldn't be a secret." His face softened as he looked at me and I felt my heart melt. He put his hand on my shoulder. This man was abnormally beautiful. When I first realized I loved him, I didn't think it would last for long, but it did. It'd been a year since my crush on Nate developed.
Something about the way he looked at me seemed different. I raised my eyebrow at him but his expression didn't change. I didn't know what to say. I could've sworn I saw his eyes travel down to my lips and then his tongue dart out to wet his own. His hand on my shoulder put him close to me and a part of me thought he would hear my racing heartbeat.
"Adults can't have everything they want." He whispered and I felt the breath catch in my throat. He was getting closer to me and he watched me intently, waiting for me to tell him no. Why would I say no to Nate kissing me? I'd wondered for a long time what it would feel like.
"Nate, are you still in here?" Suddenly, reality hit both of us and Nate quickly moved away from me at the sound of my brother's voice.
"Yeah, I was just talking with Bella. Sorry, are we going somewhere?" Nate watched as Ethan turned the corner. I felt incredibly awkward, not even able to talk to Ethan without the fear of spilling what just happened. Did Nate want to kiss me? I wanted to kiss him, and I was sure he knew that.
