"No," I shook my head. "Absolutely not. He's like twenty-two. He's old." Melanie just gave me the look that told me I was wrong. She was usually right, but there was no way that I liked Nathaniel Park. I rolled my eyes, I had to come up with a way for her to believe me.
"That's crazy...the first guy you like is your brother's best friend."
"Stop it, that's not true." I scoffed. "I like Flynn."
"Are you sure about that?" She raised her eyebrow at me and I nodded.
"Yes, completely sure."
"Good, he plans on asking you out tomorrow." Her words nearly sent me into a panic, I was scrambling around my room trying to figure out what to do with myself. There was no way I'd ever like one of my brother's friends. It wasn't logical, they were all significantly older and they rarely even talked to me.
I spent all this time trying to convince Melanie that I didn't like Nate, but maybe I was trying to prove it to myself.

The first time I brought Flynn to my house was a disaster. It was nearly two weeks after I began dating him. While I still barely felt anything other than platonic towards him, I decided that I may as well give him a shot. He was a nice guy and his friends were nice too. Our friend groups mixed at school now, which was much different from the times before that.
We sat on the couch, a great distance apart. I was right about one thing - he was definitely boring. I definitely couldn't like someone who was constantly satisfied with doing nothing. I liked excitement, as I would think anyone my age would.
What I wasn't expecting was Nate to sit right in between us. I gave him a 'what do you think you're doing' look and he just grinned at me.
"You're awfully quiet in here. I just came to liven up your day." He told me. I sighed and ran my fingers through my hair. He was almost too much of a spontaneous person. Everything he did was unplanned and he usually acted without thinking about it first.
Spontaneity usually came with carelessness.
"Nate, I'm gonna punch you." I glared at him.
"Aw," he patted the top of my head. "You think that'll hurt?" I swatted his hand away. Where was Ethan?
"I'm gonna go grab a movie." I stood from the couch and turned towards Nate quickly. "I'll fight you if you're still here when I get back." He put his hand over his heart with a smirk.
"I'm hurt, you always want me around."
His words made my face heat up, but I made sure that I was out of the room before anything was visible. I grabbed a random movie and ran back down the stairs but stopped when I heard them talking.
"Are you a good student? What are your grades in school?" Nate's voice almost made me scoff. I decided to sit and wait for them to finish their conversation.
"Uh...Bs and Cs I guess." Flynn responded, portraying through his voice just how uncomfortable Nate made him.
"Don't you think you could do better?" He didn't sound impressed. "You want to date Bella with Bs and Cs?"
"I-I'm sorry, but who are you?" Flynn asked him.
"Nate Park." He replied to the younger boy. "What are your intentions with her?"
"I don't know? I don't get why you're asking me all these questions, you're not even related to her." The sass on Flynn's part was probably his worst decision when around Nate.
"Do you plan on hurting her in any way?" He asked. I could practically see his eyes narrowing as he looked at the poor boy next to him.
"No?" Flynn was not impressed with Nate.
"Good, because I'd probably have to kill you."
It was safe to say that after that day, Flynn never talked to me again. After he left, I confronted the older boy with my arms crossed over my chest.
"What even was that?" I asked him.
"That was him not being a good guy. Do you have a thing for bad boys? I didn't take you for the type." He retorted with a question, looking into my eyes as he searched for my answer. I sighed and rolled my eyes, something I'd done a lot today.
"He was a good kid, Nate," I told him, "he's just not the best in school."
"No, no, I know how boys are." He narrowed his eyes. "I don't trust him."
"I'm sure you won't have to worry about that anymore after today." I turned away from him, starting to walk before he grabbed my arm.
"Don't be mad at me." He attempted to give me a small smile. "You'll find someone when you're supposed to. Don't worry about it. You're only fourteen. You've got so many years to grow up."
I jerked my arm away from him and went up to my room, closing the door behind me and nearly falling onto my bed. It wasn't that I liked Flynn that much, I just didn't like when people intervened like Nate did. I preferred to make my own mistakes if necessary.
It was a good twenty minutes before I heard the knock on my door. I refused to answer it, knowing that it was Nate. He was confusing, really.
"Can you just talk to me?" He asked. "Ethan ditched me."
"That sounds like a you problem," I grumbled, walking from my bed to open the door. I faced him and he gave me a wide smile.
"C'mon, you can't stay mad at me." He wasn't wrong, I was very bad at holding a grudge against anyone who wasn't related to me. He saw the look on my face and he knew I broke, the grin on his face widening.
"I hate you," I grumbled, rolling my eyes at him.
"No, you don't." He shook his head, biting down on his bottom lip. "I'm your absolute favorite." His phone rang in his pocket and his smile fell along with mine. He took it out of his pocket to see who it was, even though we both knew.
He just stared at the screen not showing any sign that he was going to answer it. I looked at him expectantly and he raised his eyebrow.
"Are you going to answer her?" I asked him.
"I wasn't planning on it." He shrugged. He declined the call and put his phone back into his pocket. "I think Ethan's back. We're gonna play basketball or something. You should come outside." I nodded and told him I'd be out in a few minutes.
I shuffled around my room for a bit. I wished I could still be mad at him. Something about him made that impossible. I walked out of my room and slid my shoes on, stopping in the kitchen to bring water out for them. They usually asked me to get some anyway.
I didn't know much about their friend Jay. All I knew was that his full name was Jasper Fitz, but he'd probably hit you if you called him Jasper. He was the oldest out of them, he had dark hair that he rarely did anything with and dark eyes to match. He hadn't spoken more than a sentence to me at a time.
So of course, when he thanked me for the water I was a bit concerned that he'd got hit upside the head to make him nice.
I sat there, nearly completely entertained by their game but still looking around. The sun was harsh today, it beat down on us and made sweat begin to form on my skin. I was in the shade, so I could only imagine how the boys playing basketball felt. I could nearly see the sweat dripping from them all the way from the porch.
I watched as Nate took the water bottle I gave him and grabbed Ethan by his shirt and pulled him back, dumping the entirety of the bottle over his head. My jaw dropped and I laughed. Ethan was more shocked than anything. Nate laughed, a wide smile on his face.
Wow, I thought, I love him. But then, I froze. It couldn't be true, there was no way I could've meant that. Maybe Melanie was right...
Maybe I loved Nathaniel Park.
