Even after my revelation I decided I wasn't going to act on it. I may have realized I would have eventually chosen him no matter what, especially after everything we've been through and getting to know him but I was still mad. He could suffer from a little uncertainty, it would do him some good.
Because of my little punishment, I did my best to ignore him whenever I could during this little welcoming committee thing. That and I watched in fascination each time a person disappeared through the gate. After the first few people went through a steadier stream of others came as more people became done with the process. Some people I found didn't take very long on their background check while there were others who had a longer time to wait before being approved. I really wondered how the process worked but I figured I would eventually find out one way or the other. I did wonder however if I had gone through the same process already because I was a citizen in Aelcrest, granted I haven't really stayed in the city that long but I have lived in the world for awhile.
Usually most people who went through didn't really talk to me. Sure there were some who did but it wasn't very long, they were mostly grateful for this opportunity and said so but one person said more.
She was slightly taller than I but younger with ebony hair, pale skin and stunning green eyes. She stood with a confidence most people try to facade so others wouldn't see their pain. I smelled the air curious because there was something a little different about her compared to others. A vampire. The girl had a hint of blood and spice to balance out the smell. The blood was the real clue in telling what she was.
"Hi, welcome to Aelcrest. I hope you enjoy your time here, there is nothing to worry about anymore," I welcomed as usual. I stuck my hand out as usual thinking she would just shake my hand and leave like everyone else. She did grab my hand and shake but when she let go she didn't leave.
"Thank you," the girl replied. "I certainly hope you're right because you have no idea what it means to hear that."
I gave her a smile, "well, for the time I've been here there has been no trouble if that helps any."
"Of course it does," the girl responded with some tears welling up in her eyes, "because it's really bad out there."
"What do you mean?" I asked a bit confused. I knew of course that there were problems with some rouges and hunters but that was to be expected. And I also imagined some of these people have been traveling alone for a long time and became lucky to stumble upon the group moving to this safe area and were thankful to hear about it. It couldn't be as bad as she was making it sound, could it?
"You really have no idea what's going on out there, do you?" The girl asked surprised. It took her a moment before she composed herself out of her shock to continue. "Anyways, it's really bad. Hunters have grew to numbers no one as seen before and they are coming after anyone and anything. If they haven't came after someone they should be counted lucky but they will eventually lose their luck. On the news for many mass murders people are making it sound like it's either terrorism or an accident just happened to that community. What is the counsel doing? They should be protecting us but they haven't done anything!" This is where some tears were let loose by silently falling down her face. "What is going on!"
I then did something I don't normally do, especially with people I don't know, I hugged the girl. "Thank you for tell me. I'll get to the bottom of this... what's your name?"
The girl sniffed as she hugged me back, "it's Mandy."
"Well Mandy, I'm Skylar and I promise when I figure out what's going on, I'll tell you and I'll try stopping all of this."
I didn't realize until I said it that I really was going to try to put a stop what was going on on earth, but how, I had no idea. I just knew I couldn't let this continue.
"Thank you so much, Skylar," Mandy said pulling away with a strained but relieved smile. "I'm actually surprised they haven't found this place and made it like everywhere else. It really must be safe, I just hope it stays this way."
"It will," I promised, "because no one would ever think to look out here in the middle of no where where we are very hidden. That and because we have some very powerful witches, warlocks, and wizards and many other wonderful people who can keep us cloaked and safe from the outside eye. No one will ever find us. I believe the Alpha King has set up so many precautions to ensure that."
Mandy glanced at Liam who was greeting others and something seemed to come to her mind because she asked, "if you don't mind me asking, what are you doing here greeting us with the Alpha King? Are you someone important too?"
I laughed lightly, "I guess you can say that. I'm his mate." It was a little weird announcing that, especially to someone I don't even really know, but it also felt... good.
At the mention of mate her eyes lit up. "Really, you're his mate? Does that make you like Alpha Queen or something?" She may have looked only fourteen or fifteen but she was really excited by the thought of mates I guess. I also guess a girl can't help but fantasize about finding someone who was made for her and would also love her.
I laughed again, "I guess, but I'm definitely not that yet."
"Why not?"
"Well, I just found out I was his true mate. He was keeping that from me but he had his reasons which I understand. I'm just not quite sure what happens from here."
"Well whatever it is I'm glad you will be Alpha Queen someday, I think you will be a great ruler." Her eyes twinkled and I couldn't help but be happy because of her reaction.j
"Thank you. Now I think it's time for you to go on through, I'll talk to you soon and as I said, I'll tell you anything I find out about what's going on. It just may take awhile for me to obtain any information."
"That's alright, and thank you so much." Mandy than disappeared through the gate after one last hug and I watched her with a smile. After that I went back to greeting others and started thinking about what we discussed. How was I going to save these people and stop what's going on? Because this was just tragic. None of this should be happening in the world.
