Chapter 21 - A Rainy Home and Coffee Foam

Start from the beginning

"I brought you food." Xavier sets the bag he was holding down next to me.

I open the bag to find all of my favourite sweets and foods. Xavier got enough junk food to last me a whole week. Of course, Xavier had to include a pack of Oreos, and they're Cinnabon flavoured. I give him a soft kiss on the cheek.

"I don't know what I would do without you." I tell him.

"You'd be starved and broke from spending all your money on junk food." Xavier says.

"True." We sit in silence for a short moment. I don't notice at first but I start to shiver a bit. All I have is a tank top and a blanket, so I'm not very warm.

"Here. Take my hoodie." Xavier removed his favourite hoodie, a black one with the Overwatch logo on the sleeves. I put it on quickly, and it fits perfectly. "There. All better."

"Thanks, Xavier." We sit in silence again.

"Y/N," Xavier asks. "Do you ever wonder about what your life would be like if your parents were still alive?"

"No," I reply simply. I take a deep breath, thinking about what to say. "I know what my life would be like. If my biological father hadn't killed my mother in that accident, he probably would have killed her due to his abusive nature. I would have had to live everyday being abused by that man, whom I still consider dead. If he didn't need rehab, and a psychologist to get his abusive nature in check, maybe I could reconcile with him. Since he has proved to me that he will never change, and that he will never stop being so abusive. Even though he's supposed to be my father, he's not my dad, he's not my family, and he never will be. No matter what."

I wipe the tears from my eyes, regaining my composure as Xavier holds me in his arms.

"My biological father is not my father. No matter how much blood we share. Blood means nothing if they don't try to be your family." I start to sob a little more. "He wouldn't support me like my mum would. He would get drunk and beat me everyday. He would treat me like a punching bag and not his daughter. I know he tried, but his abusive nature is something he can't ever fix, especially since he choses not to fix it. Blood means nothing if they're not your family."

Xavier stops for a moment to wipe the tears from my eyes.

"You know how I only really live with my dad, right. You know how I never really visit or talk to my mother?" Xavier asks.

I nod in response.

"That's because just like you and your father, my mother and I aren't family. She may share blood with me, but one day she stopped being my family. It hurt for a long time, but I eventually got over it, moved on, and bettered myself so that I wouldn't make that same mistake." Xavier stops to look in my eyes. "I never knew your mother, but I know she loved you more than life. And I know that she'd want you to take my advice."

Xavier takes a deep breath.

"Chose your family. Chose who you trust with your life, with your troubles and worries, with your deepest secrets, and with your greatest treasures. If you don't have a family, it's up to you to make your own. Luckily, you already have. My advice to you is that nothing and no one should tell you who your family is. No one gets to determine who you chose as a part of your family, and no one gets to determine who you are and will become." Xavier looks down at the blanket covering us both. He starts to speak again with a shaky voice. "Never let anyone tell you who or what you are because you have an amazing family right behind you to protect you, and help you through anything. You are so beautiful, so talented, so kind, thoughtful, caring, bright, smart, happy, adorably day and anxious, amazing person. You're the best thing to happen to me, and to so many other people. You don't even know yet how important and wonderful you are. You're self deprecating and insecure. I'm here to tell you that you have no reason to be."
