"Hey, Connor." You tilted your head to the side at Hank's voice somewhere behind you. Connor stopped commentating the current basketball game on the television in front of the two of you. He offered to explain what was happening in the game so that you weren't confused over what was happening.
"Yes Hank?"
"I just got called about a sighting of that AX400 Android. We need to go, now." He spoke partially to himself. Connor went to stand up from his sitting position. When he stood up to leave, a strange feeling in your heart made you lurch up from your seat.
"Wait!" Your voice came out too desperate for your liking. Hank turned his head to look at you, in which you were currently in the process of standing up from the couch.
"I-...I want to come along. I could help." Your eyes flickered between the old man and Connor. "I..." Your voice broke off from the realization that you didn't really have a good excuse. Hank gave a reluctant look, eyes eventually falling to the floor. You noticed a half-smile appear on his face.
"Yeah...yeah. Just hurry up." The two of you rushed through the home to gather coats while the RK800 stood aimlessly at the front door.
"Alright, lets go." Hank announced before swinging open the door. You bid a farewell to the saddened Saint Bernard behind the three of you. Connor gave him a pat on the head.
Soon you were all back in the familiar red and brown inside of Hank's car. You didn't have a clue of where you were going or what you've gotten yourself into, but you were glad you weren't all alone anymore. Sometimes you really did miss Connor. You mean- not just Connor,... These thoughts were confusing. You forced yourself to look outside. Large grey clouds covered the entirety of the sky you could see. Rain droplets tapped on the windows of the car, attempting and failing to get inside.
"So what are we looking for?" Hank mumbled to Connor as he drove towards what looked like the Ravendale District, based on the GPS monitor on the dashboard.
"An AX400, with a small child." Connor held up his right hand, revealing a front-facing profile of the deviant. She had dirty blonde hair, blue eyes, and a patient smile. The deviant seemed too innocent, you couldn't imagine her putting anyone in danger.
"The report says that it stole some money from a nearby convenience store." Connor added as the picture disappeared. Keeping that in mind, you continued to wait until your destination was reached.
The car came to a jolting stop. Hank got out of the car first, followed by Connor on the other side. Before leaving the vehicle you noticed police officers on duty along the sidewalk on both sides of the streets. At least five or six on each side- this definitely looked like an investigation-in-progress. What did you get yourself into? Hank was in mid-conversation with Connor until you appeared beside Connor, feeling out-of-place as ever.
"Oh, right..." Hank frantically looked around, quickly deciding that you couldn't actually help with the investigation at all. His hand was stuck into his back pocket and swiftly pulled out a brown wallet.
"Here's twenty bucks," Hank handed you the bills, Connor patiently watching. "spend it somewhere, but don't go too far." You accepted the money and nodded towards them. As you wandered away down the street where you stood, Hank called out again.
"Don't get yourself killed!" He yelled after. A simple "I won't!" Is how you replied. Obeying the "right side of the sidewalk rule", you peered into windows of shops you weren't familiar with- which was most. The only stores you knew most of was food and clothing shops. Speaking of which, you were just about to walk into a clothing store when a person bumped into you.
"Oh, sorry-" You mumbled until you saw the woman's face. Blue eyes, damp blonde hair in a pixie cut (mostly hidden under a red beanie), and a worried expression. Holding her hand tightly, was a small little girl with brown hair.
"An AX400, with a small child." She had dirty blonde hair, blue eyes, and a patient smile. The deviant seemed too innocent, you couldn't imagine her putting anyone in danger.
She recognized the expression on your face quickly and spoke before you could.
"Please," Her voice was quiet yet pleading. "we just want to be free." You quickly made a decision. You glanced over to where you came from, when your heart dropped.
"Connor! It's over there!" The Deviant and child looked behind them with fear. Your words were quick to come out of your mouth.
"The Deviant hunter's coming. You need to run that way, as fast and as far as you can." The two hesitated. Connor came into view, people dodging him in the sidewalk.
"Go!" You yelled, pushing them forward. People on either sides of the street stared over at the scene. Turning your head back, you saw the two running together, the taller deviant pulling the child along. Ahead, Connor was running full-speed towards the Deviant. Something told you, you couldn't let him catch those two- you just couldn't explain why. You didn't care about the consequences. You braced for impact all the while blocking the rest of the sidewalk. Not being able to stop in time, Connor fell into you and sent you backwards onto the cement. You grunted at the sudden weight on top of you and pain in your head. The RK800 didn't even matter an apology as he jolted back up and continued the chase. Your reflexes proved useful as you caught hold of his pant leg, then his shoe.
"Connor, stop!" You cried. He looked back down at you, trying to tug away from your grasp. The rain mixed with your hot tears as you regained your posture and completely pulled his body out of the way.
"Please don't- th-they want to live free. Connor, please!-" You choked. Looking upwards, you noticed his LED was a bloodshot red. Your voice continued into meaningless pleading and crying. Every time he would try to pull away towards the street, you would tug his jacket to keep him away. He eventually gave up.
"Connor! Connor- did...did you get 'em?" Hank ran up towards the two of you, resting against a brick wall for support. Connor hesitated.
"No." A distraught expression appeared on his face. Hank looked up and down the streets, then over to you. You slowly moved away from Connor, feeling ashamed. The lieutenant didn't respond. Just simply walked back towards the car silently. After standing together for what was spent like hours, the Android spoke up.
"It's alright. Don't feel bad." Connor spoke before leaving you.
