After the brief conversation outside of the evidence room, Connor helped sneak you out of the police department and back to Hank's residence. Everything seemed so...still. In the best possible way, of course. Your heart was finally relaxing to its normal beat. Sumo barely noticed your entrance when the two of you returned. His softly thumping tail made your hands itch to pet him, but you had a bigger desire in your mind right now.
"So..." The Android in front of you kept walking forward towards the kitchen. No electric lights were turned on inside, but the sunset outside filtering through the windows was enough to allow you to see.
"You never told me what your plan was." The thought had been bouncing around in your mind during the taxi ride back 'home'. Which mainly consisted of watching familiar buildings whirring by into the quieter parts of the city, and the repeated sound of a metallic coin.
"What plan?" His voice broke the silence. You had engraved the way he spoke every syllable, word, and sentence in your brain. Listening to him speak is like a privilege you don't deserve. You observed his eyebrows draw together. It seems Connor had forgotten about the past discussion. Simply forgetting something was quite a feat for an Android, but you supposed Connor had an explanation for that. Even if he never expressed it verbally, it was blatantly obvious he was deviant.
"You found where the deviants are hiding. Why are you going there?" You leaned against the back of the couch. The wooden floor below your feet creaked from old age. Your eyes flickered over a showcase of paper books situated in a bookshelf. You don't ever remember seeing bookshelves anywhere else. Connor seemed faraway while he removed his working jacket and set it neatly on the back of a dining chair. You could see the word "ANDROID" spelled out in thin lettering. He gazed out into the sunset, just barely vanishing behind the horizon.
"I want to provide all the support I can towards the revolution. They may need it." You savored how the orange and yellow lights cascaded onto his brown locks. You've seen him almost every day of your life since the incident, but you'd never get rid of the simple yet confusing feeling when he was near you.
"Connor, are...are you sure that's safe?" Your voice wavered with uncertainty. Seeing the white shirt instead of the jacket that labeled him as an Android was an interesting change. You liked it, a lot. And even though you're sure his clothes were custom-designed to fit his body, that button-up seemed tight on him. You were most likely imagining it.
"I'm not certain. But I was designed to fight, and I'm assuming the majority of Jericho doesn't know how to effectively." This caught your attention. He openly admitted that he was going to fight for his freedom.
"So you'd throw your life away as quickly as that? Just for support?" You couldn't stop your voice from rising alongside your worry. There was sudden silence. Not even the TV was on; Hank wasn't home. Connor slowly turned around to face you. He took one, two, three steps closer to you. Without a second thought, your head was titled upwards to meet his bronze eyes. The room had seemingly changed temperatures drastically. Your face heated up and your eyes couldn't stop blinking from the heat. The Android however, wasn't affected by the temperature at all.
"If it meant that my people could live free..." Connor's loving gaze didn't leave yours. "then yes." He raised his hand to rest under and along your cheek and jaw.
"But don't worry about me anymore than you already do." You nestled into the hand that cupped your face almost perfectly. The cool touch of his fingers allowed you to leave your eyes shut for a moment. When you looked back up, you noticed Connor's LED blinking yellow. Then it flashed to red.
"What's wrong?" His hand slipped away from your cheek. The freezing silence surrounded you once more.
"Nothing you should be concerned about."
The unexplained panic Connor had momentarily experienced concerned you, definitely. It felt like breaking an unspoken rule to ignore his advice towards you. But who could calm down when he was pacing around the main area of the house? The deviant checked the front window every few minutes, even momentarily watching the dead-end road for something. In about five minutes or so, Sumo got upset and tried to ground him to his normal state. Sumo only received a few pats before Connor returned to his slowed down, extremely short marathon. Curiosity got the best of you and you tried to pry out Connor's thoughts, but to no avail. It was only until you had started watching a basketball game that your nerves finally seemed to calm down. Then the front door opened.
Connor almost ran to the half-open door to invite whoever was outside, inside.
"Agh, Jesus- what the fuck?" The Android gripped his hand around Hank's shoulder, half dragging him further inside.
"We need to speak privately." Connor's voice was tense- sure, you've heard him in a panicked manner before, but this voice was stern and rushed.
"Wha- why? What's wrong with you?" Hank barely managed to close the door shut behind him. The snow on his shoulders and hair just started to melt away. Now the house was chaos. Sumo was trying to get more ear-scratches, you were now standing and observing the scene... and Connor was nearly/successfully dragging Hank further into the house. Hank struggled some more before getting his shoulder free.
"Please." Those bronze eyes flashed to look at you. His voice dropped. "It has to do with my plan." Hank paused while fending off a large and furry creature at his feet.
"Alright. What is it?" They both started to walk towards the bedroom.
"Excuse us." Connor started to shut the white door to block the sound of their voices.
"Wait, why can't I hear?" You took a step forward. "I thought we wouldn't keep secrets from each other." There was a pang of pain in your heart. Something didn't feel right. This had to do with Connor's safety and future, but you couldn't know about it. You knew Connor was experiencing the same feeling, from the expression on his face alone. He didn't speak.
"...You'll know in time."
That was all you were left with. Eight whole minutes. You counted as the hands on an old-fashioned clock Hank had ticked away. That's how long it took for the bedroom door to open again. Only Hank exited.
"What's wrong? What did you talk about?" Your entire body was turned on the dog-fur-ridden couch to face him. Hank was silent for a moment while he walked to the kitchen. Being in the middle of such an important discussion made you almost inferior. You wanted to grab both of them, and tell them 'Let me hear!' 'I won't take it badly, I swear!' 'I'm not as fragile as I look!'. You're not sure how that would go, so you decided against it.
"The FBI found Jericho's location." His words came out in a sigh. "They saw you two in the security footage." He sat himself down at a dining room chair. Sumo curled up on the floor next to him, his tail and legs resting at Hank's foot. So now what? Back against the couch you returned, legs folded back against your chest again. Your chin rested on your knuckles, curved around your kneecaps. You couldn't stop the rushing thoughts in your mind as you sat. What could you have done differently? What will happen to Jericho? More importantly, what will happen to Connor?
The click of the bedroom door sounded. When you stood up to speak to him, you were met with a stranger. A black hat covered the hair you had grown to know and adore oh so well. It fit perfectly over his shining LED. Over a pair of broad shoulders, a dark brown jacket wrapped around a familiar body.
"Y/N, before you speak-" Connor held his hands out to defend himself. He really was the same Android underneath the disguise.
"You're just going to run over to Jericho to help those who don't know they need saving? They'll kill you all, you know that!" The heart in your chest was pounding. You'd do anything just to keep him here, where he was safe by your side. Unlike what your tone has to say, you weren't mad. You were scared. Much more scared than you'd ever admit.
"It's a risk I'm willing to take." He held a finger over your lips before you could even open them (again). You obliged, secretly loving the feeling. The cool synthetic skin against your warm lips did wonders for your already amped nerves.
"If I didn't even attempt to try, it would make me feel as if I failed." That same hand slid down from your face to your upper arm.
"Connor I-" After an attempt at speaking your words ended up as a frustrated sigh.
"I just want you be safe." For a moment, you weren't sure if Connor even heard you. What came out of your mouth was a mix between a shaky sigh and a whimper. You looked back up at Connor when there was silence.
"Nobody is ever truly safe. But that hasn't stopped anybody." While you studied and re-studied his liquid amber eyes, Hank shifted uncomfortably in his seat to bend down and pet Sumo. One of Connor's hands was already at your waist. It felt so natural- nobody needed to confirm that it was happening, it just... was. And it felt right.
"I will return to you. Please don't break yourself down over this." You knew you would. Now that you had grown to close to him, if Connor was hurt, or...or killed... You couldn't imagine what you would do. Would you even believe it?
"But, if I don't return..." His head fell along with his voice.
"Connor, don't," Connor's other hand found your cheek, his fingers lightly holding you.
"...take care of Hank and Sumo for me. Please." His lips trembled into a weak smile.
"don't say that." A whimper escaped your throat by some miracle. It hurt so much to not cry, but it hurt to cry at the same time. Your body just couldn't choose between one or the other. Now you couldn't meet his eyes at all. You only studied the folds of his shirt, how the shadows curled around the fabric.
"Okay." Connor whispered, smile still remaining. You wrapped your arms around his body without a second thought. A surge of energy ripped through you. Who you held in your arms felt like a real human, aside from obvious differences. That electricity amped up even more when he brought himself closer. His borrowed jacket faintly smelt like a mix of dog and old cologne. Everything felt so real; not saying that Connor wasn't. You so desperately wanted time to stop, or pause, or at least slow down. This was perfect.
Then he kissed you. In an instant, the world disappeared. It was just you and Connor, with his lips caressing yours. All you could focus on was the sudden release of energy all around you. This made up for every time you thought about him, felt him, and spoke to him. Alas, with the loss of energy, you fell weak. You buried your forehead into his clothed chest while he moved his arms to hold your body. All that could be heard was Sumo panting softly behind both of you.
"Please come back." Your ear was pressed against him. Faintly inside of him, you could hear the Android-counterpart of his heart.
"And that, keeps you alive. No matter if you're a machine or not."
"You can count on me. I wouldn't ever leave you, love." Connor's arms disappointingly left your sides. You wanted to press lovingly up against him even more after your newly adopted nickname.
"I should be back in a day." His voice rose just enough so the room could hear him. Your eyes met one more time. You made sure to study them, and study them well. All you could make out was the non-spoken words of "I love you" hidden somewhere deep in those artificial irises.
And without a word, he left. The door clicked shut. Your legs brought you to the couch. Your weak fingers ran through the hair you wished he could play with. Anything could be traded for that feeling. How empty you felt, now that he was taken away from you again. The first instance, you were in shock. You didn't believe a word that Hank mumbled. But when that rebuilt Android returned, a part of you returned with him. The cushion next to you depressed. Hank breathlessly chuckled for a second. You turned your head to look at him. In all honesty, you expected a sarcastic comment. But he spoke in the most gentle tone you've ever heard him speak in.
"You really love him, don't you?" His blue eyes smiled all-knowingly at you. Your head fell to look at the floor.
"I just don't want him to be hurt." You didn't dare speak anymore. Tears threatened to spill out of your eyes, and you didn't plan on crying in front of Hank (again). So you hid your face again, and the home was doused in silence. The next hour was a blur. Only the local news station lit up the living room. You only remembered Hank's arm draped around your shoulders comfortingly as you cried at the news report. Jericho was being raided by the army.
I hope you enjoyed this chapter.
Until next time, PixelCrew!
