Step Seventeen

I ran my hands through Brute's hair, him being fast asleep and his head resting on my lap. I ignored the pain in my thigh from the chain wrapped around his neck, instead opting to not move a muscle. This was the first time he had fallen asleep since being there, so I wasn't about to disturb him.

"Ally." A voice whispered. I looked up to see my brother standing outside of the cell gate. The keys in his hand jingled as he opened the door to the cell. My wolf ears perked up at the sound of the keys as he made his way towards Brute and me. Brute shot up the moment Lucas reached for the chains.

"What are you doing?" Brute asked, his eyes narrowing. Even though Lucas helped us with the rogues, Brute didn't trust him whatsoever. He thought my brother was to blame for him being in chains. I knew better, but I didn't want to fight with Brute.

"They're changing the guards so we need to hurry." Lucas replied. Brute watched him like a hawk, but let Lucas unlock his chains. My mate was on his feet the second the chains were off, stretching his back. It amazed me how fast his power and energy returned to him. It only took a minute for Brute to be standing in all his glory, his power coming off of him in waves. He grabbed my hand and pulled me out of the cell. I stopped and turned to my brother to see if he was coming, but he was slowly walking towards us.

"Lucas?" I questioned. He gave me a small smile before closing the cell gate, locking himself inside of the cell. He tossed the keys to the other side of the hallway so it was out of reach.

"I love you, Ally." He told me, tears glistening in his eyes. The tears in my own eyes fell onto my cheeks, quickly soaking them. I knew what this meant, I knew I was leaving Lucas for good. He was my brother, my best friend, the only person in my life and here I was, leaving him behind. I hated knowing I was leaving him behind to cover for me. I hated that he would be all alone. I could stand the thought of him being alone with no mate or best friend, but I couldn't stay. I needed to go with Brute, we couldn't live without each other. Brute needed me now more than ever and I knew I could stay behind. Brute was my mate; he was above family at that point.

"I love you too." I whispered. I reached for him, but Brute was pulling me away. I let my attention turn to escaping, knowing I'd have time to mourn later. We ran up the steps and into the night air. It seemed as if the new guards had just gotten there because they were still walking into their spots. Their eyes widened when they saw us and quickly shifted into their wolves. Brute and I shifted also and the guards attacked. It was almost like I wasn't there because they went straight for Brute without paying any attention to me. Knowing we needed to go before reinforcement arrived, I jumped into the fight. Since all their attention was on Brute, it was easy for me to go for the kill shot. I cringed as I suck my teeth into one of my pack member's neck. He struggled against me and I pressed down harder until he eventually just stopped. I didn't have time to flinch before Brute was pushing me along. We reached straight for the woods and towards the border. I could hear wolves chasing after us, but we were too fast for them to catch up. It didn't take long for us to pass over the border and Brute kept going but I stopped. I turned to see my dad and his wolves at the edge of the border.

'You're making a mistake.' My dad told me through the mind link.

'No, I'm not.' I shook my head.

'You'll regret this.' He said and the mind link went completely dead. My eyes widened when I came to the realization that I couldn't use the mind link whatsoever, I was kicked out of the pack. Not only that, but my dad disowned me, I no longer had a family.

Brute's muzzle pressed against my neck, trying to push me along. Still staring at my father, I let my mate lead me away until I was forced to look forward again. When I was finally in control of my thoughts, we started running again. After a while, I knew right away where we were heading. A few minutes later we broke through the trees and headed straight for Brute's house. I was a little surprised to not see any of the rogues around. I was half expecting them to of taken over Brute's house, but they were nowhere in sight. I was still cautious, though, as we walked through the house and up the stairs to his room. Brute pushed the door opened with his muzzle and shifted once we were inside. He pulled on a pair of shorts and a shirt before throwing sweatpants and a shirt my way. I shifted into my human form and slipped the clothes on. They were big on me since they belonged to Brute, but they'd have to do.
