*Your POV
Being commended from our first successful mission, Leo and I were given a new job two weeks after just doing chores around; to patrol the capital. And it was also a good opportunity—as captain Fuegoleon had said—for my mentor to tour me around at the same time too.
My mentor seemed enthusiastic about it...as always. He laughed arrogantly, with the same bravado pose and then gave me a somewhat another unnecessary reassurance. "Don't worry little one! As your mentor I will not fail you."
And I on the other hand would nod. "Thank you, sir." Replying with the same enthusiastic tone in my voice making the cheery mentor of mine rejoice even more.
He patted my head and laughed. "That's the spirit my little one! Keep that up!"
"Yes sir!"
And as early morning came into the land of clover, we obligingly started to make our move. Walking around proudly with our magic knight robes, Leo decided to tour me too, explaining some histories he knew and just saying 'this stuff and that stuff too' if he doesn't. Yet with his lack of humor—because it looks like his enthusiasm and arrogance bloomed despairingly superior than other personalities—It looks like I was enjoying his company instead of feeling bored for some reason.
And as we walked through an isolated alley, he suddenly turned quiet. Like he was thinking. It made me curious although I didn't want to ask about it, not until he suddenly brought it up. "That Yuno boy." He suddenly said making me turned towards his direction.
"What about him?" I asked back.
"Are you two a couple?" he seriously asked.
"Couple?" I echoed quietly. Realizing his question, my eyes widened and face burned as I quickly waved my hand to deny. "W-what? No! Yuno and I...we just...you know... grew up together in the church!... but I wouldn't say I'm the one who grew up with him entirely since Asta was the one who grew up with him." I said almost tripping from every words I say which made it embarrassing as I spoke even more.
"Is that right?" he chuckled. "Do you like him?"
"Yes—NO sir!" I shook my head in frustration feeling that if I looked at myself in the mirror, I would look like a ripe tomato.
"Do you think I have a fighting chance against him?" he asked again (Assuming you are slow so in the story. It simply means: if he had a fighting chance against Yuno in a place in your heart.).
"H-huh? Y-you're both powerful so I think so..." I said not knowing how to criticize the situation.
"It may not be the question I meant to ask, but I think that'll be a good answer." He said, voice was lighter than usual.
"A-are you sick, sir?" I asked. I went near, holding his forehead with my left then mine to the right feeling the difference between our temperature. He looked surprised from what I did that his eyes saucer a bit but soon it went back to normal and he just stared while I tried to differentiate our heat. "It doesn't seem to be the case." I let both our foreheads go while I brushed the extent of hair in my face away clipping it to my ear thinking what the case was.
"Don't think too much little one." I jumped, surprised from his sudden usual arrogant laugh. His tapped my shoulder and grinned. "I've decided to make Yuno my rival (A rival to your heart. Ha ha)!" he said out of the blue.
"Uh-huh..." I frowned, still confused from what happened.
"And don't just daze there little one, we still have a job to finish." He said continuing our forestalled walk while I still emerged from more confusion. I look like an idiot right now. I can tell.
An hour came to pass when we still patrolled few parts of the capital, some snatchers were caught red handed but nothing heavier than that. Until it was half day of walking and nothing eventful occurred and my exposure to the sun took too much toll that I felt dehydrated. Good thing my mentor took me into consideration, allowing me to have a rest near the fountain to drink water. I cupped the water in my hands, drinking thirstily feeling my sweat dropping from every part of my body.
Relieved from drinking from the cool fountain, I sighed. Sitting with my weight heaving the hard concrete floor. "You alright little one?" Leo asked. He was sitting on the border of the fountain beside me looking down while I try to rest my fuzzy head.
"I'll be fine once I rested a bit." I replied. "It's just the first time I've been too exposed from direct sunlight."
"Hmm? Weren't we just walking one whole day going to Marse?" he asked back a bit skeptic.
"Well, that was because we're shaded by the forest trees. I never thought the capital would produce such heat. I feel like I'm going to melt." I complained.
He laughed. "You're just not accustomed yet. The capital has always been like this during summer." He replied. I scratched my head still looking unsatisfied with his reason. "How are you feeling, little one?" he asked back.
"My head just hurts a little. I'm a bit dizzy."
"Then that's bad. We can't go on patrol with you feeling that way, you might collapse."
I looked up at him. "I-it's alright sir. I'll be fine with a little rest. Just give me a couple of minutes, I'll be as good as how I was earlier this morning." I said, standing up, but suddenly felt myself strained that I tripped on my own weak knees. Leopold quickly caught me, prolonging my fall with his arm around my waist hooking me up like a sack.
"Hey there, little one. Sit still." He said with a worried voice.
"Wasn't there an earth quake?" I asked back a bit out of reality.
"See that. You're as pale as dead." He seriously said.
"I'm not." I complained standing up with my own strength and massaged my temples.
He faced me, petting my head like an animal that made me looked up at him. "Little one, a part of being a magic knight is being fully aware of his limitations. Imagine yourself in the battle field and it happened to be in the middle of a dessert. You will not last long." He said.
I frowned. "S-sir, I'm sorry. I don't quite get what you're trying to tell me." I said.
"You should take it little by little. And eventually you'll realize that you are immune to direct sun anytime." He explained then pointed straight to a random direction. "So for now, you should get back to the headquarters and rest. I'll be doing the patrol."
"W-what? But if I do that, it's like neglecting my job as a magic knight—"
"No, of course not!" he cut me off pointing towards me with his usual enthusiastic expression. "It's called step by step improvement!" he said.
"I've never heard there's something like that." I whispered more to myself than him.
"So little one. Don't think I'm giving you a special treatment, I'm just giving you time to be accustomed. More than anything else, I'm still your mentor and I want you in good shape any time of the day." He said which earned him another one amazed look from me.
And without further argument, I saluted, hands on my chest with two fingers folded and the other three straightly aligned to each other. "Yes sir! I'm going to get better, I promise!" I said.
That look on me pleased him, smirking fondly, giving me another pat on the head. "That's good to hear little one." He said. "I'm looking forward to see you stronger than my rivals."
