DANIEL'S POV
"Garrett, hurry!" I say, pulling on my shoes. "If we don't leave now, we're not going to get to stop and see Jonah before your party!"
Garrett rushes down the hallway, fumbling with his tie, his suit jacket on one arm and dangling behind his back. He shrugs it off and throws it at me. "Here. Hold this." He finishes with his tie and then takes the jacket, following me out the door, driving to The Coffee Shop.
"Hey Zach!" I say, waving as we get in the door, Garrett's eagle eyes taking in everything around the shop. "Jonah around?"
"He's in the back," Zach answers, pointing behind him. "One sec."
I turn to Garrett, a smile in place. As his eyes meet mine, the smile is wiped away. "What?"
Before he gets a chance to answer, Jonah comes out from the storage room. "Dani!"
The smile is back. "Jo!"
He engulfs me in a hug. "I thought I wasn't going to see you again for a while."
My grin widens. "Can't get rid of me that easily." Behind me, Garrett coughs, and Jonah gives me a questioning look. "Oh, Jonah, this is my boyfriend, Garrett. I forgot you two haven't met yet."
Jonah sticks his hand out for Garrett to shake, but Garrett just looks him straight in the eyes. "Quite a place you've got here."
"Oh, thank you," Jonah says, his cheeks turning slightly pink as he takes his hand back. "These guys help me out a lot." He motions to Jack and Zach behind the counter. "Corbyn and Eben are taking the later shift today, but they're here a lot too."
Garrett says nothing, but continues to look at Jonah and around the shop. As soon as Garrett's eyes are peeled away from Jonah's, Jonah gives me another quizzical expression. I shake my head slightly, telling him that I don't know what's going on.
"Um...can I get you anything before you go?" Jonah asks us both, gesturing to our clothes, which look way too fancy for the coffee shop.
Garrett answers without looking Jonah in the eyes. "No, thank you. Come on Daniel."
I hug Jonah again, Garrett standing next to me, his eagle eyes not missing a thing. "Thanks Jo. We have to hang out again soon, when you're off next."
Jonah smiles playfully. "I can be off whenever I want. You're forgetting that I run this place." He gestures around The Coffee Shop.
I laugh. "That's true."
"How about on Friday?" Jonah asks. "Eben, Jack, and Corbyn will all be in, so I'm sure they'll be more than okay without me here."
"We might have plans," Garrett cuts in quickly. "Now, come on Daniel, we can't be late."
"I'll call you," I tell Jonah, following Garrett out the door. Jonah nods and waves as we get back into the car.
I turn to Garrett as he sits behind the wheel. "What was that?"
"Nothing. We're just running behind," Garrett says simply. "Do not go with him on Friday, by the way."
"What?" I ask incredulously. "Babe, he's my best friend."
"And I'm your boyfriend, and I'm telling you to stay away from him!" Garrett's chest rises and falls rapidly as he tries to control himself.
"That's not your decision to make," I say softly.
"Daniel James Seavey..." That was all Garrett needed to say before I knew to shut my mouth. We might be going to a party, but that wasn't going to stop him later.
