JONAH'S POV
The police car can't move fast enough.
"Come on, come on," I urge under my breath. I keep bouncing my knee, a bad nervous habit of mine, and my heart is racing. We need to get to Daniel, and this car feels like it's going two miles an hour in a sixty mile zone.
Zach rests a hand on my shoulder. "Jonah, calm down. He's strong. He'll be okay for a few more minutes."
I shake my head. "It's not Dani I'm worried about," I tell Zach.
He seems to read my mind. "Jonah, it's not your fault that Garrett kidnapped him. You had no idea this could've ever happened. We've been over this."
"And I've been over it a million times in my head," I argue. "What if I never left? What if Garrett had killed Daniel? What if...what if...?"
"Enough," Zach says. "Jonah, we're gonna get him back, safe and sound. I promise. And you're going to be the first person he runs to when we all walk in."
I manage a little smile. "Thanks, Zach."
"Anytime," he says, and that's when the car lurches to a stop.
"Put these on," an officer says, throwing two vests over the seat - one for me and one for Zach.
My heart rate picks up. "What are these?"
"Bulletproof vests," the officer replies. "Just in case."
We quietly race up the steps of the building to the apartment. From inside, we can hear yelling and things being knocked over or dropped, and then something slams against the wall and sinks to the floor. I bite the inside of my cheek. I can hear Daniel yelling, something about love, comparing Garrett to...me. My heart swells and breaks at the same time.
We hear Garrett growl, and the officers choose that exact moment to bust open the door and take him down. I see a baseball bat drop to the floor, and I shiver. I look for Daniel, but I can't see him over the heads of so many police officers and among so much happening.
"Daniel?" I yell. "Daniel!"
I push through the apartment and find him. His eyes land on mine, and he crumples with relief, tears streaming down his cheeks. "Jonah!" Daniel runs to me and I catch him, grateful to have him back in my arms. "Thank God!"
"You're safe," I tell him, holding him close. "I've got you. You're safe with me."
"Daniel!" Garrett yells as he lunges in the officers' arms. "Baby! Tell them this is all a big misunderstanding!"
Daniel's head lifts from my shoulders, and in his eyes I see not fear, but fury. He walks slowly toward Garrett, his chin up and his head held high. He stops right in front of him, and for a second, I think he might slap him across the face.
Which I'm not saying is a bad thing. At all.
But then, I hear him whisper, "Go. To. Hell."
Garrett's smirk slips off his face as the police walk him out to the cop car, and Daniel returns to his place in my arms - right where he belongs.
