JONAH'S POV

Unable to sleep that night, I get up early, before Daniel, and I turn the stove on to make us pancakes.

My head has been spinning all night long. I can't believe I kissed him. I can't believe he kissed me back. I can't believe someone who has been through hell could still be so kind and adorable and forgiving.

I can't believe a lot of things. But what I can't believe most is that someone like Garrett could do what he did to someone like Daniel. And then, a thought formed in my head, a little voice whispering to me, and it hasn't shut up since.

Daniel comes down the hallway, yawning and rubbing his eyes. He's still sleeping in my room, much to his objections, but I prefer it that way. Whatever I can do to make his life better, I'm going to do it.

"Morning Jonah," he says, smiling sweetly as he takes a seat on one of the bar stools on the other side of the island. "What are you cooking up?"

"Pancakes," I say, flipping one over and listening to it sizzle. "And some advice."

"Advice?" Daniel raises an eyebrow. "For who?"

"A sweetheart I know named Daniel," I respond, and he blushes and ducks his head.

"All right, let me hear it then."

I take a deep breath and put a plate of pancakes in front of him. "Okay, but you're not going to like it."

"Just spit it out already, Jonah," Daniel laughs, cutting his pancake up and preparing to take a bite.

"I think you should press domestic abuse charges against Garrett."

And just like that, the fork freezes on the way to Daniel's open mouth, and it seems like the air between us freezes too. "What did you just say?"

"I think you should press charges," I repeat. Looking him in the eye, I say, "No one should have to go through what you went through. If he's done it to you, who's not to say he won't do the same to someone else?"

Daniel shakes his head, and I can see the fear creep into him. "Jonah, I can't."

"Why not?"

"Because I can't." Daniel shakes his head again, and sighs. "As much as he probably deserves it, he was someone I loved once, and I'd like to believe that there was a time that he loved me too. Plus, do you have any idea what he'd do to me?"

"Nothing," I say quickly. "He wouldn't do anything. Not with me around."

Daniel smiles weakly. "Jonah, I told you, I'm not ready to trust someone yet."

"Daniel, you're living in my apartment, and you've known me for years. I'd say there's a little bit of trust here." Deciding to really be bold, I add: "Plus that kiss last night told me you had plenty of trust in me."

But Daniel just shakes his head again, though his cheeks are slightly pink. "I'm just not ready. For anything involving him."

"You don't have to decide right now," I say. "At least think about it. That's all I ask. And as for me, I'm not going anywhere. I'm sticking around."

Daniel nods. "Thank you, Jonah."

"Always."
