"They're not completely similar, but they're pretty close," Carol said, observing the color of your palms. "My energy is more orange and red. I see more of a blue hue in yours."
"And I don't... walk through walls," you said.
She snorted, then tilted her head. "I wonder why."
"Different amount of power?" you asked. "I'm obviously weaker than you."
"Don't be so hard on yourself," she said. "And don't underestimate the strength inside of you. It goes beyond the energy in your hands."
Carol swung her leg off the stool. Your eyes followed her, and then your feet. She was heading towards one of the training rooms.
"Come here, I'll show you," she said.
Obediently, you got up.
"Oh, boy," Rocket muttered, hopping down off the stool that he had been relaxing on. He finished the can of beer and tossed it in the trashcan.
Thor had been sitting near you and Carol as well; when Rocket got up to follow, so did he.
"Come on, Rabbit. This will be interesting." Thor took his beer with him, leading the way into the training room.
Inside of the room, you stood in front of Carol.
"Who trained you?"
"Uh, my dad," you said. "But he didn't really know what he was doing. I mean... he sort of blamed himself for me being who I am today. Well. Now he's proud, I'm sure - but it was an accident when this happened. I-I was taken control by Loki-" You pointed to Thor, "-his brother, actually, using the Tesseract. My dad... wasn't able to get me away from the source fast enough. When it exploded, it all hit me. I woke up and I was suddenly capable of doing all of this."
"How old were you?" she asked.
"Fourteen."
She nodded, then took three large steps back. "Okay. Now gather up all you have in you."
"What?" you asked.
"Gather up all the power! Pull it from here." She patted where her heart is. "Gather it, feel it, and hold it. Then add some of your own emotions in it."
"Okay," you said. You curled your fingers until your hands were in tight fists. Clenching your muscles, you shut your eyes and started to pull from your heart.
Okay, you thought, what am I feeling?
Lots of things.
I'm thinking that I can't handle taking control of the Avengers.
Where's my dad? Is he dead? Did he leave me?
Why didn't he take me with him? Didn't he need me?
I am going to kill Thanos for what he did to us.
A scream burst out of your throat as heat and a rush of pure energy consumed you. Your eyes flashed orange.
Carol grinned. "Yes!" she exclaimed.
You looked down at your arms and hands. Not only blue energy, but orange and white flickered around you, too, lifting your hair like static, making your skin tingle.
You looked at her, eyes wide. You'd never felt so powerful.
"Whoa," you breathed.
"I told you," she said. "Everything that I have, you have, too." She opened her hands, her palms filling with flickers of orange and blue. "Throw it at me."
"Huh?"
"Throw it at me." She smiled, "Come on, I can take it."
You did. Your arms thrust forward and she caught all of it, vanquishing the energy, then wiped her palms against one another.
"That power," she said, "that is inside of you."
"Yeah," you said, eyes twinkling in amazement. You looked down at your hands.
You couldn't help but picture what it would be like to finally end Thanos with it-
Walking out of the room with the group, Rocket trailed behind, walking beside you.
"So that's really all you had to do to make your powers ten times stronger than they were?" he asked.
"Guess so," you replied.
He scoffed, "Humans. I'm getting another beer. Want one?"
"I'm underage, Rocket," you said.
"Blah, blah, blah..." He threw his hands up in the air dramatically. "You humans and your laws."
You couldn't help but smile. But the smile faded when you saw everyone standing around the globe and the screens showing the fallen Avengers.
"What happened?" you asked.
"He used the gauntlet again," Nat said.
"He what?" You staggered forward. "They're not... they weren't destroyed?"
"Apparently not," she said.
You looked around. Carol was staring at the screens.
"We need to stop him now," you said.
"Hey, hey, hey," Bruce interjected, hand up. "We'd be going in way shorthanded."
Rhodes sighed. "Yeah, he still has the Infinity stones, so..."
"So let's get 'em," Carol said. "Use the stones to get everyone back."
"Just like that?" Bruce replied.
"Yeah." Steve nodded. "Just like that."
"Even if there's a small chance that we can undo this, I mean - we owe it to everyone that isn't here to try."
"If we do this, how do we know it won't end any differently than before?"
"Because before you didn't have me," Carol said.
Rhodes looked at her. "Hey, new girl, everybody here is about that superhero life. And if you don't mind my asking, where in the world have you been all this time?"
"There are a lot of different planets in the universe. And unfortunately, they didn't have you guys."
Thor got up out of his seat. He held out a hand and Stormbreaker whirred past Carol. He caught it and approached her slowly.
"Oh, great," you muttered.
Rocket wandered into the room, two cans in his grip. He handed you the can of soda. "The heck did I miss?"
Carol didn't cower, or make a move to attack, or show any reaction at all-
Except a single sly, amused smirk.
Thor's face softened. He nodded in approval. "I like this one," he said.
Your lips turned upward.
Then the communicator in the corner of the room, the thing that had been left untouched for a week now, beeped.
Everyone looked at it.
"No frickin' way," Rocket whispered, the can slipping out of his hand.
"It's them?"
He grabbed the communicator. "Yeah."
Hurriedly, you and most of the group rushed outside. You ran ahead with Rocket.
From up high in the atmosphere, you saw bright lights.
"That's my ship," he said. He sounded so happy.
You nodded. Eyes on the sky, you waited for the ship full of Rocket's friends to land.
