I Had To Go

You ran all the way downtown without stopping. When you finally decided to rest, you leaned against the building closest to you and held your stomach, feeling your ribs ache. Of course, this wasn't going to stop you. To ensure no one would stop you, you made your way to the furthest bus stop you could think of.

As you turned the corner, you ran right into something, causing you to stumble, lose your footing, and topple to the ground.

"Oh my!" You heard, recognizing it as the school's secretary. "What are you doing here?"

Struggling to your feet, you looked at Whis suspiciously and curiously. "I could say the same for you..." You commented, "Don't you stay at school until it's locked up?"

"Locked up," he echoed with an amused hum. "Oh no, I go where I'm needed."

"Well, shouldn't you be helping the school?"

"And shouldn't you be cleaning the school?"

Damn, he got you there. But could you tell him what you were doing without severe comeuppance? Taking a deep breath, you stuck out your chest and said, "I'm running away."

"Oh... really?" Whis seemed more curious than anything, which for some reason bothered you. When you nodded tensely, he just straightened and said, "Well, I hope you find what you're looking for, wherever that may be." Though there was an aloofness to him, he seemed to speak with sincerity.

There was a silence, each expecting the other to do something. "You're not gonna stop me?" You asked after a beat, moving to step around him.

"Of course not," he said, confusing you as he let you pass. "We believe that everyone at Shenron Academy should be allowed to be who they are. If you're someone who runs away from things, then so be it. Just know that a lot of your friends will miss you."

What he said caused you to stutter, but you still continued on to the bench at the bus stop. Whis followed, heard when you said, "Friends? Don't mock me."

He seemed amused by that, and as he sat beside you, he said, "I wouldn't mock a student. You have a lot of friends." When met only by your silence and crossed arms, he continued, "People like Goku and the Ginyu Squad will miss you when you go. Not to mention Krillin and Bulma, even 18 sees you as a friend."

He had to be lying. No way.

Glancing down the road, he said, "I know the Ginyu Squad especially will suffer a loss when you leave. You were an excellent cheerleader, plus an attentive student." He then looked back to you and said, "But I'm not here to guilt you into staying. When you leave, I hope you have a safe journey." With that, he got up from his seat, offered you a smile, and left.

It gave you a lot to think about, but there was hardly any time. The bus pulled up, and slowly, you got up from the bench. You supposed it was time to go. Before you could step onto the bus, Whis's words echoed through your head.

'A lot of your friends will miss you.'

It caused you to hesitate, and the bus driver looked over to you. "You coming or staying?"

After a moment, you pulled away from the bus's door. "I forgot something anyway," you said as you turned away, and a moment later, the bus drove off, and you sat down on the bench again. You tried to think over what was happening, but your mind kept coming back to the music playing in your earbuds. You hadn't taken them out since you ran from the school.
