"I've just been feeling really weird recently," I sighed, "probably because I've been moving around nonstop for a year."
I shrugged and adjusted my backpack strap.
"I'll be home in a day or two so it's alright," I smiled, "Shikamaru, watch out, I'm coming back to get your complaining ass."
"Help!" a small voice shouted from somewhere in the forest.
"No, y/n, you need to get back to the forest. Ignore the small voice," I hit my cheeks so hard that it just stung from the impact.
"Somebody help me!" the voice shouted again.
"Nope, I'm going to help," I said as I ran through the forest, looking for the source of the voice.
"Help!"
There!
I backed up against a tree and created a small circle of ice before carefully stretching my hand out and staring at the reflection.
Seems there are three rogue ninja ganging up on a little girl... no... a boy? I'm unsure. Either way, they can't be any older than 7 or 8 years old. Long hair trailing the floor, bright red, one red eye and one yellow, pretty dirty clothing...
"Disgusting," I hissed under my breath before sending a layer of ice across the floor.
"The hells this?" one of the rogue ninja growled under his breath as I stepped out from behind the tree.
"How dare you attack a child," I glared at them murderously, "disgusting!"
"What's it to you, lady?" another rogue asked, this time a woman, and as she spoke her tongue fell disgustingly out of her mouth allowing spit to fly everywhere.
"Well, I can't just let you kill or touch a child without pure intent," I told them before releasing the ice around the child's feet and stretched my hand out to them, "come with me, I'll protect you."
At the moment they looked weary before nodding and grabbing my hand.
"Ice dome," I whispered before pulling the child onto my back and then jumping away from the growing ice dome.
Once I'd gotten back to the main road, I placed the child down and took a look at them for any injuries, nothing much more than a small sprain in their ankle, not too hard to heal up.
"What's your name?" I asked them.
"A-Ayanakoji, ma'am," the boy replied.
"You're a boy? What's with the long hair?" I asked him, he laughed at my reaction.
"I haven't had it cut in years," he told me with a grin as we both sat down.
"Where are your parents or village? I'll take you back home," I asked him. He looked down sadly.
"Parents are dead and my village, destroyed," Ayanakoji replied solemnly.
"How long has it been like this?" I asked.
"Three years," he replied with a little sniffle.
"The war, huh?" I asked, he nodded.
"My village was caught in a crossfire and my parents went to fight in the Allied Shinobi Forces," he told me, "I've been alone ever since."
Suddenly, I got a bright idea that's going to make my one or two day journey a tad bit longer.
"How about I take you to an orphanage or you can come with me to my village. I was just on my way home," I stood up and stretched my hands out to him, "I know a pretty interesting orphanage run by a pretty weird guy called Kabuto. Oh, I'm f/n l/n-Nara by the way."
"Nice to meet you," he nodded to me, "and please, I can't go to another orphanage..."
"You want to come with me then?" I asked softly with a sympathetic smile. He nodded.
"Alright then, come on, we've got a journey to walk," I announced, he looked at me happily and took my hand so I could pull him up.
"Are you married?" Ayanakoji asked after a few moments of silence. I looked down at my ring finger and smiled.
"Yes I am, he's called Shikamaru and he's the second most laziest person you'll ever meet," I told him with a smile.
"And the laziest?" he inquires curiously.
"My father-in-law, Shikaku," I replied with a smile, "he got serious rarely but when he did, oh man he got things done quicker than you can click your fingers. He liked to share his wisdom whenever he had the chance."
"You speak in the past tense, is he dead?" he asked, I nodded.
"Died during the war," I replied, "I didn't even know until I got home."
"Sounds sad," Ayanakoji whispered. I looked at him out the corner of my eye, he was really sad. I sighed.
"So when was the last time you had a haircut?" I asked him with a teasing grin.
"When I was 4," he replied, "so three years ago."
"So you're 7 now?" I asked, he nodded, "thought so."
"So what's your village like?" he asked me with a grin.
"It's big and something is always happening, never a dull day there," I told him, "although, I haven't been there for a year at the moment. I've been tracking down missing ninja and passing messages back and forth between villages."
"Sounds busy," he replied, "how have you coped without your husband?"
"I've coped but not with ease," I replied, sulking slightly, "I miss him. Both of us have been so busy that we rarely even manage to send messages back and forth."
"Does sound troublesome," he nodded before smiling and running ahead a little before turning towards me and pointing, "at least you get to see him soon!"
I smiled and nodded just as the sound of groaning erupted from behind us. I hummed in confusion as I turned around to see a line of people. But something in their eyes... something made me think they weren't good news.
