Context: Mitch and Jerome had just moved into the Pack treehouse about 5 days ago. Mich only recently seen Jerome as a hybrid, so he's still getting used to the sight of him with ears and tails.
It's raining when Mitch looked up from his monitor screen.
He assumed that was it, that it was just a small session of rain for the sky to cry it out when in the distance a sudden bolt of lighting came down. It filled his dark room with light and made him jump.
"Shit!" Mitch cried out when he tipped over the coffee cup he had left on the desk, next to his laptop. He had a moment of panic until he remembered he had finished drinking it a couple hours before.
Ah shit, what time is it?
A look at the clock in the corner of his monitor showed that it is already past midnight, almost 2 am. The rain was pouring down harder now, almost as if it was eager to break down his entire window. Time to move out of his room for a while, he guess.
The hallway lights were off in the tree house of the pack. Mitch inhaled, taking in the smell of the rain as it hits against the wooden planks of the roof. He flicked one set of the lights on and walked down the stairs not that he is able to see the way. The last time he didn't turn off the lights, Jerome woke up to him tumbling down the spruce staircase.
Speaking of Jerome, Mitch had thought that he was asleep. It was ridiculously late, even for his standards.
He paused when he saw his best friend awake, sitting on the couch and silently watching the pictures on the tv. Mitch had to blink 5 times before he realised the TV was muted.
"Jerome?" He mumbled. The bacca turned and stared, his ears twitching. Mitch paused, still a little uneasy to see his childhood friend as a hybrid. "Whatcha doing?"
"TV. What are you doing?"
"I had been working. Now I'm walking to the kitchen,"
Jerome grinned showing off his sharp teeth. Mitch laughed softly to himself to ease the feeling of nervousness.
He dropped (not literally or Rob would give him an earful) the cup into the sink before walking back out into the living room, sitting down on the couch next to him. Jerome's tail twitched between them, and Mitch fought the urge to reach down and pet it.
"What are you doing up this late?" He whispered. Jerome opened his mouth to say something, but the roar of thunder came after, startling both of them. Mitch watched in amazement as his best friend's eyes turned into slits but his ears lowering even further.
"Shit, that was loud,"
"Yeah... you okay?"
Jerome's pupil returned to his usual round ones before they focused back on him. Mitch gulped when they dilated while staring at him. The rain was the only thing at this point stopping the silence, but Mitch was unconsciously blocking that noise out in his head as well.
"What are you, scared of the thunder?"
"No," Jerome hissed, unil thunder struck on the left side again and the hybrid jerked backwards into the couch, slumping down into a pile. Mitch laughed softly.
"Yeah right,"
"I just have sensitive ears," Jerome growled, his ears twitching up and Mitch smiled to not flinch. The hybrid's ears twitched before lowering back down. "One of the few downsides of becoming part bacca,"
Mitch reached out subconsciously, brushing his finger against the fur on his ears. Jerome's eyes darted to his left to watch his actions, and his body visibly tensed up, but did nothing to swat his best friend away. Mitch smiled to himself to keep himself from flinching again.
His finger brushed against the inner side of his ear and Jerome twitched visibly, darting away from his touch. Mitch paused, unsure if he crossed the line of intimacy until the ear lowered back into his touch.
"They're," Mitch cleared his throat and tried to think of a way to phrase his next words better. "They're really soft,"
"Yeah, I brush them every day,"
The two softly laughed, stifling under their breath to not erupt into chaotic screeching.
The two sat together in silence, watching the movie that is currently being broadcasted without any of its audio. Jerome stayed where he was for the next 10 mins, half on the couch and half on the floor, while Mitch watched as his fingers weaves through the fur on his ears. He slowly grew more brave, from a single finger to gently use his hands to massage the entire ear, watching Jerome's reactions closely incase he starts to overstep. The rain remain calm for these few minutes, until it abruptly isn't.
This time, it was even louder than the last one, louder than the two before combined together. Jerome hissed out when he heard the loud noise once again, jumping up abruptly and clasped his hands around his ears in pain. Mitch darts back from the couch as the other man squeezed in between his body and the couch, his head buried behind Mitch's body.
"Jerome!" Jerome let out a whimper as the sound faded out, hands still around his ears. "Are... are you... okay?"
"Fuck, that was fricking loud,"
"Are you going to be alright?"
"I..." Jerome peeked an eye out and rubbed the area around his ears. Mitch smiled softly at him to reassure him, hoping that he was okay. "There's a ringing sound, is that normal? The ringing sound is not leaving,"
"Jerome you're not okay," Mitch whispered. "Do you want to go back to your room so you can bury yourself underneath the pillows and blankets?"
"Why do you think I was out here in the first place, biggums," He mumbled. Mitch squeaks and glances to his right, watching as his best friend's tail swished annoyingly, brushing against his right arm.
"Well, anything I can do to help?" Mitch asked. He's trying to focus on his best friend's words, he really is, but the fact that his tail has started rubbing his arm is really ticklish and distracting. He tries to pat the tail down, to calm it down. It seems to work because the tail's movements start to become less erratic.
Mitch squeaked when he felt something bump against his backside. Jerome spoke up, still curled up behind him. "Just... just stay here for a little while longer, so I have someone..." The hybird went quiet, nuzzling into the warmth that is Mitch's body.
Mitch sighed, and grew quiet, listening to the now calm rain knock against the surface of the glass. He reaches out to the side of the couch to grab the remote controller, before turning the television off. The room now is completely dark. In the darkness, Mitch looks down and focuses on the tail still jerking left and right, placing a hand onto its fluffy surface and running his fingers through the fur. It twitches for a second, before slowly stops to rest and relaxes against his grasp. Behind him, Jerome lets out a huff.
Mitch smiles softly to himself, to reassure himself that everything is alright now. He leans back into the couch and tries to fall asleep without waking up his best friend snuggled behind him.
