Jesse clutched his pillow in his bed, staring into the darkness surrounding him. Ignoring the dull ache in his wrist, he lifted it up to his face. He ran his finger over the small, even stitches on them, then placing his wrist back down, burying his face in his pillow. He froze when he heard the soft click of the door opening, a little light from the hallway flooding his room.

"Someone's having trouble sleeping, I see?" Lukas peeked in the room.

Jesse avoided Lukas's gaze, resting his face in his hands. Lukas bit his lip as he looked at Jesse; his normally emerald green eyes were a dull, pale green, there were cuts and bruises littered all over his face, and his exhausted eyes were laced with sadness. Jesse winced in pain as he shifted in his bed.

"Jesse, I know you're not okay. Please, talk to me. It's like...you haven't really been here. I don't want to lose you."

Jesse sat there for a moment, absorbing his words, a mass of thoughts spiraling their way to the back of his mind. Jesse only gave a slight shrug, shaking his head.

"Please. I know you're in there."

Jesse's expression remained stoic as his gaze met Lukas's, trembling as he spoke the first words he had in a while.

"I'm scared."

A sob burst forth from him as he covered his face with his hands. His chest heaved, as he took small, shallow breaths.

"Don't worry, I'm here, nobody's going to hurt you anymore." Lukas whispered, gingerly placing his hand on top of Jesse's. Jesse yanked his hand away, shrinking against the wall, bringing his knees up to his chest.

"I promise, you're safe now."

A cry tore from Jesse's throat as his face contorted in pain, tears blurring his vision. No matter how much he denied it, he needed help - even just a dull candle was better than nothing in the complete darkness. Lukas wrapped his arm around Jesse's shoulder, pulling the frail boy on his lap as Jesse sobbed into his chest unceasingly, his whole body shaking. Lukas could do nothing but stroke his back, give Jesse as much time as he needed. Eventually, Jesse pulled away, tear-streaked face looking up at Lukas as he tried to speak but only accomplished a tiny whimper.

"It's probably been ages since you've gotten proper sleep. I'm not going anywhere." Lukas said, allowing Jesse to rest his head on his lap. Jesse's eyes fluttered closed, drifting off into a quiet, undisturbed slumber. Maybe before had he not had peace, and he knew he had a long road of recovery ahead of him, but with the most supportive friends he could ask for, one day he believed he would find happiness.
