14- The First Step to Every Adventure

"It is!"

Kai takes the pages from Dareth and turns to a page near the back. "'Kai's mysterious lover: a mystery no more. The fire ninja is known to be a hit with the girls, and many clame they were his true love. His latest "flame" is with the popular, pretty faced Jessy, - Dareth, what is this?" Kai waves the magazine in the air accusingly. "It's all fake news!"

"Who cares if it's real or not? Isn't this what you've dreamed of? You five-"

"Six," Nya glares at him, arms crossed. The man in brown ignores her.

"-Are the hottest thing in Ninjago!"

He looks at us like that's the best think that could happen to us. To say the ninja are sceptical is understating it.

I'm punching a punching bag lightly on the deck of the Destiny's Bounty, listening to Nya rant about how she's treated differently because she's a girl and cursing Dareth, makeup and cooking with every fowl word she can think of. All the while destroying dummies with streams of high pressure water.

"Just a girl... I'll show him," she grumbled.

"Still mad at Dareth?" I ask.

Nya growls as she continues to spar with the droids, not looking up at me but speaking louder so I can hear properly. "He wants me to teach girls to cook! Well, how about I show them how to do this!" A continuous jet of water destroys the remaining dummies. She lets out a frustrated sigh.

"You know, that's not a bad idea..." I pull a bar of chocolate out of my bag and hand it to her. She takes it without saying anything and breaks of a chunk.

Chocolate doesn't fix every problem, but it tastes good and makes you feel good. Plus, ever since I learned how much she's obsessed with the treat, I made sure to bring a small peace offering every time I visit the Bounty. And since I started training with her, that's become more and more frequent.

"What do you mean?" She asks around the candy.

"Teach young girls how to fight. Like a self defence class or something." I swing my leg around and hit my target dead on. "Maybe I can talk to my captain about the precinct hosting something like that."

Nya tilts her head in wonder but doesn't say anything.

Misako walked out of the bridge and over to where we were training. "Bad day?" She asks. Then she notices the scrap heaps that were the training dummies. She sighs. "You're supposed to hit them, not destroy them."

"I'm a girl, but I'm also a lot of other things. But what does that matter when everyone only sees me as the girl Ninja," Nya mocks and let's out a groan. "I just wanna be given a fair shot."

Misako starts to reset the bots as the water ninja rants. "Why? So things will be easier? The harder it is, the more you will excel. You'll never be happy if you let the world define you. You've got to define yourself,"

"She's right, Nya," I nudge her arm. "Besides, we rule this world,"

I see Zane and Jay looking at us out of the corner of my eye. Apparently so does Nya. "What are you looking at?" She snaps at Jay. And the two go back to their game. ( Zane is totally wining)

My pocket vibrates. I pull my phone out to find one new message.

I excuse myself and read what it says.

'Captain Stevens
-we need you to come
in. How quick can you
get here?'
