RECAP

Steve sighed, glanced at Jake, who was sleeping soundly, safe in his bed. The miner smiled, then dragged himself to his bed of furs and blankets of the ground, passing out as soon as he drew the covers over his tired, aching body.

          At last, Jake was safe.

Unexpected Kindness

          "Steve, I can walk—"

          "Well, you aren't going to."

          "Steve—"

          "No."

Jake huffed, lifting his head from his pillow to glare at Steve's broad back, then letting it fall back again, "It's not serious."

Steve turned around from the furnace, holding a bowl of warm soup, his right arm in a sling, "Well, it is to me." He carried it over to Jake, who scowled at him from his splayed position, legs on a raised, folded fur blanket. Steve sighed, "Look, Jake, I..." He sank onto the side of the bed, looking down at the steaming soup, "I was terrified that you would die...out there. I have never felt so scared in my life. Please just...let me take care of you." He shuddered as Jake's scream rang again through his head, then glanced at Jake.

The blond sighed in turn, "Fine...but only if I can try walking later today. And if you use that arm even once, so help me Notch I will walk out in the snow barefoot."

Steve raised a brow, "Deal...now eat."

Early that morning, Steve had again heated up a large tub of water to soak his arm and Jake's legs, both gently massaging the limbs to help restore circulation. Neither of them complained of the aches that would shoot and tingle through their limbs and instead hid their pain as best they could. After the treatment, Jake had swung his legs over the side of the bed and tried to stand, but Steve quickly squashed that idea by threatening to tie him down.

Steve handed Jake the bowl and helped him sit up. Jake held the bowl in his lap, lifting it to sip at the hot soup, "When do you think we can go to the town?"

Steve grunted, pushing himself up and heading to the furnaces again, where a large pot of soup stood, heated by the furnace beneath it, "I'll see how well your walking is after you eat, then decide." He scooped himself a bowl, then sat beside the fireplace, lifting his bowl to his face and blowing on it before sipping.

"'M finished." Jake set aside the empty bowl and swung his legs to hang over the side of the bed.

Steve choked on his soup, "W-what?!" Coughing, he quickly set the bowl aside and hurried over to Jake, "It was hot! How in the Overworld did you get it down that fast? And go easy on—"

Jake held out a hand, stopping Steve about a block from his bed, "Nope! You promised I could get up!"

Steve pinched his lips together and reluctantly halted, watching as Jake's bare feet touched the floor. The blond hesitated for a second, then pushed up, wincing a little. He swayed, took a step forward-
