Carlisle had applied a cream to Laura's burn; thinking it was a 2nd-degree one so he also made sure to cover it in gauze and wrap it before telling her to keep the cream since it would take a little while to heal. Then he moved onto Bella and began to pick stray shards of glass from her wound.
"I never wanted to have a party"
Those were the last words Laura heard as she left Carlisle's office and closed the door behind her. Jacket in hand she placed it over her arm to hide the bandage as she headed downstairs, though she was suddenly met with Rosalie standing in front of her. "Jasper asked me to drive you home."
Laura scoffed, not at Rosalie directly, just the situation. She shook her head, "I wanna see him." Rosalie stood her ground, her arms folded over her chest as she stared at the human. "You know, I know, and he knows, I won't leave until I speak to him." Laura sternly said.
"Babe" Emmett's voice rang out, breaking the slight tension between the two, "Alice said it's okay"
Rosalie clenched her jaw, before slowly and unwantedly stepping aside so that Laura could head down the rest of the stairs before Emmett walked her to one of the many rooms she had yet to explore until now. Alice was sat with Jasper, his gaze was down, guilt looming over him like the clouds of Forks. He had proven he was truly capable of what he feared, what he had warned Laura of. As Laura slowly walked towards them, Emmett left the room. Alice tried to stand, intending to leave too and let them talk but Jasper grabbed hold of her wrist. Laura noticed and stopped her approach as she began to feel awkward. "Jazz I'll be just outside" Alice assured him before the vampire released his grip. Passing Laura, Alice smiled at her before stepping outside.
"I told you" Jasper croaked, not looking at his mate.
"You didn't hurt me" Laura said stepping towards him instinctively, though Jasper held up his hand for her to stop.
"Yes, I did. I hurt you and I almost hurt Bella" he sighed.
"I'm fine" Laura insisted desperately, though her words caused Jasper to stand and finally raise his gaze to her as he walked towards her. Reaching down in one swift movement he pulled off the jacket that was slung over her arm to reveal the bandage.
"That's not what fine looks like" he gulped sadly, eyes fixating on the bandage. Noticing his fixation Laura took the jacket back from him and placed it over her arm once again.
"It's a burn Jasper, it'll heal, it's not a big deal" The blonde shook his head and turned away from her, not saying anything in reply. "Bella's okay, you didn't even touch her Jasper"
"But if I did!" he snapped quickly whipping around. "If they hadn't grabbed me, if my family weren't around she wouldn't be alive, and it's likely you wouldn't be either" he grimaced. "I... am alone with you so often, what if an accident like tonight happens when they're not around to stop me?"
"I'm not a cluts like Bella, don't compare me to her" she urged. "She knows... I know, the risks of being around vampires. And I know even more so the risk I'm taking with you, but you're worth it, you're worth everything" Laura attested, her watery eyes scanning over Jasper's regretful expression.
"You should go home" he nodded walking back to his seat again.
"Can I get a proper goodbye at least?" Laura sniffled, saddened by the feeling of rejection overcoming her.
Jasper paused he was so upset with himself, his control with Laura had been pristine but he'd not thought twice about getting used to being around Bella and now that had backfired. As he turned to look at her, his dejected expression only deepened as he saw the tears in her eyes and he felt what she was feeling. Slowly he stepped back towards her and embraced her, Laura was quick to hug him back not arguing that it wasn't a kiss since she was thankful to at least get this.
"It wasn't your fault okay" she whispered holding him tightly. "Accidents happen, Bella and I will be fine in a few weeks, no permanent damage" she nodded as they pulled from the hug. "Don't beat yourself up about this"
Looking into his golden eyes Laura attempted to lean in carefully for a kiss, though Jasper turned his head before she could. "Not tonight"
Breath shaking she nodded, instead settling for a peck on his cheek. "I love you"
"I love you too" he whispered.Laura headed home and of course lied to her mother about how the night went and was haste to change into a hoodie to cover her forearm as she spent time with her mother watching tv before bed. The next day came and Laura went to school like nothing had happened because she wasn't making a huge deal about last night. Getting into the parking lot she was surprised when Bella made her way over. "Hey" Laura greeted getting out of the car.
"Hey, how's your arm?"
"It's okay, stings a bit but I'll get over it" she shrugged. "How's yours? Jasper feels terrible about what happened."
"I know, I'm not mad at him" Bella assured her. "And it's okay, Carlisle did a good job" she smiled.
The two waited and chatted by Laura's car for a few minutes, upon not seeing any of the Cullen's cars enter the lot they then moved to hang with Jess, Mike, Angela, and Eric before eventually, the gang all strolled inside. That day, the Cullens didn't come to school so Laura was surprised that when she got home Jasper was standing on her porch. She smiled when she saw him, though he didn't return the action, which was very uncommon for them. Turning off her engine Laura was slow to get out of the car and walk towards him. There was a sick feeling in her stomach. Eventually she reached the porch, flashing a small smile to Jasper though again it wasn't returned.
"Can we go inside and talk? Before your mom and Nate are home" he asked swallowing the lump in his throat.
"Uh yeah" Laura nodded, fumbling to get her keys and unlock the door before they both went inside. Laura dumped her bag by the door and dragged her feet to the living room, Jasper somberly following behind. Turning to face him Laura felt uneasy and Jasper didn't help to calm her, not with his abilities, nor his demeanour, nor what he said next.
"Edward's talking to Bella. He's telling her we have to leave town because Carlisle looks younger than he's supposed to be but... it's because of what I did"
Laura's breath hitched. "You're leaving?" Jasper nodded. "What you did was an accident, it-it was Bella's fault for getting a stupid papercut!"
"Don't blame Bella"
"I'm coming with you, you can't just leave!" she sobbed looking at him desperately, desperate for him to let her come, desperate for him not to be so hard on himself for what neither girl cared about. "What if I said change me?" Laura blurted taking a step towards him. "You said whenever I'm ready, what if I'm ready now? That means I can come with you right?" she bargained a tear rolling down her cheek. This was utter emotion and desperation, she wasn't ready for that, not yet, she cared too deeply about her mom and Nate to change yet, but she did love Jasper and this was hitting her hard, making her say just about anything.
"Laura..." Jasper started, his gaze not breaking from hers. "You make everything harder for me, worse"
The girl shook her head, she didn't want to believe that she made his life worse when she had tried to help him in so many ways, with his thirst, with his ability to be close to her, just to make him smile and happy. "I don't believe you" she struggled to get out.
Jasper knew how stubborn she was, but he wasn't letting up this time, not with this. "I can't have someone like you around anymore... I want Alice back"
The words echoed in her head, Jasper had said the one thing Laura had feared most. "Y-you want Alice?" she mumbled her wet eyes falling off him. She scoffed at herself and shook her head, "Of course you do" she cried. "S-she's better than me" It was like a punch to the gut, the sick feeling in her stomach grew and she just wanted to curl into a ball. "You can be around her without worrying, she's like you, she understands you better than I can, she..."
Jasper cut her off. "I'm sorry" he whispered. He was trying to block out her emotions, but he couldn't, and he felt awful. "I'm sorry that I put you through this"
"You really don't want me?" Laura asked with the last bit of hope that he might change his mind.
"No... it's always been her" he nodded. Laura's breath was heavy as she sat down on the couch to stop herself from collapsing. Jasper walked to the couch, "We'll leave, the memories will fade and it'll be like we- I never existed" he attempted consoled.
The tears continued to fall as she struggled to catch her breath as her world came crashing down around her. For once she couldn't argue back, he didn't want her, he wanted Alice, the girl that had brought him hope, the girl that helped with his thirst, the girl that had led him to a family, the girl that could do things Laura wasn't capable of. "I'm sorry I hurt you" Jasper apologised again leaning down to kiss the top of her head.
Laura's head was down, eyes were flicking everywhere as she tried to gather her bearings, though she saw that suddenly Jasper's shoes were no longer in view. Looking up he was nowhere in sight, "Jas" she cried dropping her head into her hands. "Don't go"
Just down the road Jasper appeared by Alice who looked at him sorrowfully. "Jazz" she began, though he was quick to cut her off.
"It was the only way she'd let me go" It was a lie, of course it was. He loved Laura unconditionally, but he felt that being out of her life, allowing her to live a normal human life without him and the danger he brought was for the best.
